Currently have an intel i3 7100, a gtx 1050ti and 8gb ddr4 2400mhz.

(and a 1tb 7200rpm hdd if that matters)

Thinking of upgrading to 16gb, would this force me to upgrade my power supply? My current power supply is only 280w so I think I'm cutting it close as it is.

(I have no idea what my motherboard is since I didn't buy the motherboard, and programs such as speccy aren't helping me at all)

No, you don't need to upgrade the PSU if you're upgrading the RAM.

I would upgrade the PSU because it's likely a fire hazard considering the overall specs of your system and the fact that it's probably a junk unit.

Guessing it is a Dell, HP or some other OEM. You should be able to run a locked I7-7700, 1050 TI, 16GB DDR4 2400 dual channel memory, the optical drive, the HDD, and a SSD. I would not put in more than that.

They measured the asus I7 6700 with 1050TI at 144W, a difference of 46 W from the 1050TI, and if calling for the max 75W, the system is still at 180W of the 240W Dell, 192W would be 80% leaving 12W for that SSD easy.

I've been using this system for quite a while and experienced no issues with the PSU.
