Would I need watercooling for the i7 7740x?

Solution

The problem is...
You really shouldn't buy that processor. It's basically an i7 7700k minus the integrated graphics on a much more expensive platform. You'd get a much better CPU for the same (or possibly less money given motherboard costs) if you get the i7 8700k and a Z370 motherboard instead. The only reason to go X299 is if you plan on buying one of Intel's Core i9 chips which are 10+ cores. Even if you need the additional I/O that X299 provides, the i7 7740x doesn't allow you to use it, as it is locked to only 16 PCI-E lanes and only allows the use of half the RAM slots of an X299 motherboard.

There's a deal on amazon right now so it's only £200 which is why I was considering getting it since the 7700k is currently £280

The problem is X299 motherboards are much more expensive than Z270 motherboards. The i7 7700k can be put on a $100-120 board and have full overclocking capabilities, same deal with the 8700k and a Z370 board. The absolute cheapest X299 board is $200 and the cheapest one that isn't a horribly cut down low quality product is probably closer to $270-300.

Even with the Amazon discount, you're not saving money because of how expensive the board is. Unless you can get an X299 board for really, really cheap, the 7740x is not worth getting.
