Want to upgrade system. Is there anything on here that could be salvaged and used with a newer board?

CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 3.7 GHz Dual-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus H170 PRO GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
Storage : Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4 GB ACX 2.0+ Video Card
Case: NZXT S340 ATX Mid Tower Case No Prices Available
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Does anyone know if having a motherboard with a Z allows for faster processing?
My son mentioned that his board is processing fewer frames than it use to. He’s had this system for 3 years.

If you're going to do any serious upgrading I'd swap the PSU before making any serious changes. That NEX PSU is a low end HEC unit and if you decide to add a new GPU it most likely won't provide the proper power source it needs. It might be fine now but if you try to add any GPU above say a 1060, it will definitely struggle.

And as was stated you could update the BIOS and drop in an i7-7700, add an SSD and then you could add whatever GPU you wanted as long as your PSU could handle it.

Swapping equipment.
replace NEX 650 PSU = Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120mm PWM Fan
replace GTX 960 =
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 SC GAMING, ACX 2.0 (Single Fan), 03G-P4-6162-KR, 3GB GDDR5, DX12 OSD Support (PXOC)
replace i3-6100 = i7-6700 Skylake Quad-Core 3.4

What SSD would you suggest, I'm trying to find one that's reasonable above 1T

Please advise.
