I currently have a athlon 64 X2 4000+ and I would like to upgrade to a athlon 64 X2 6000+

Specs:
PSU: 305 watts (will upgrade if needed)
GPU: GeForce GT 430
Ram: 4 gb DDR2 PC2-5300

Yes, they are both AM2. Though at this point, I suggest you just get a new computer.
