Would this PSU suit my needs?

Hello!

I'm basically just asking around and seeing if anyone has any experience with a Corsair RM550x. I have a CX500 that I upgraded to last year, free of charge from a relative who had one lying about, but I've read some rather worrying things about its reliability and just to be safe, I'm upgrading away from it.

My budget is roughly around £90, I'm looking for something around the 500W-550W range, with a decent reliability - So based on what I've seen, it seems like it hits every note for me, but I thought it'd be best to ask about first, see if anyone can tell me better etc.

My build is as follows:
Intel i3-4160 3.6GHz
Nvidia Geforce GTX 960 4GB, with an OC from the manufacturer (I think 5%)
Two WD Blue 1TB hard drives

I'm not sure there's anything else that needs mentioning build-wise. It is mostly for gaming, so obviously it matters quite a bit to ensure I have the right one in there.

the RM550x is one if not the best quality mainstream PSU for everyday use and gamers.
should do a fine job. if the RM550i is less than 10$ more it's worth a thought as it uses a better fan but wouldn't pay more than 7$ additional

I've checked around for an RM550i but I've been unable to find one, could you link me to it? I've only been able to find 650W variants of that particular set, which costs roughly £40 more. But thank you for your answer, I think I am likely to go with the RM550x, I've had a rather good time with Corsair products thus far.

you're absolutely right, the RMi starts at 650W, my bad

yeah well Corsair doesn't make it's own PSU, they buy OEM ones and rebrand them. some of them are good, like the RMx. some of them are bretty bad, like the CS.
but the RMx is a really nice unit, go with it!

I did eventually decide to go with the RM550x, as I am only looking for something more reliable and of a higher quality than my CX500, and there seems to be nothing to suggest that it isn't just that. Thank you for your help!

That would have done you in all fairness, based on the same platform & a very good PSU at £55 delivered.

The Reliability of a cxm550 doesn't come close to the one of a rmx550.
It's the minimum to be considered a quality PSU but can't compete with the higher priced big brother in terms of... basically everything except price

On paper maybe not but a PSU with a 5 year warranty I'd expect to last 5 years & actual testing wise ripple & stability there definitely isn't $50 between them.

Reliability ?? Only PSU I've ever had fail was a g2 550 (rated as one of the best) & it took out the whole system - faulty unit ?? Yes absolutely but reliability is never guaranteed.

Just saying I wouldn't spend £90 on a PSU for a build with an haswell i3 & a gtx 960 is all.

The cx500 he had was good enough for those.
