I build my gaming PC recently and I had overheating problems, an hour of gaming GTA V at maximum settings, my PC reached 140, and at one point it reached 150 at which point the PC gaveup and I got the blue screen with the text that windows turned off to save system files or something like that which I guess it was the hard drive that gave up, I looked into ways to cool it down better when I realized my fans only run at about 5v when they are 12v, I downloaded SpeedFan but it dosen't read my fans, I went into BIOS and I do have one setting for the fan, and thats to run them at 100% all the time, but they are so loud that I can hear my PC thru out my house with doors closed, so I though, what if I unplug my fans, get a 4 pin connector, plug it to the motherboard where the fans used to be plugged in, get a small knob, connect it to the 4 pin cable and then the knob to the fan, I would have the 2 cables that are responsible for RPM ect plugged in straight into the connector but just have the positive and negative to the knob so I can control the power that goes into the fan, I'm not sure if that would work if it's healthy for my motherboard because when the motherboard will be giving out 12v to the plug and for example the knob will only allow 4v to pass thru, I'm not sure if this may short out the motherboard.
