Would you buy a Phenom or an i7 ?

^ Yeah I think most enthusiasts here would rather pick up a cheap CPU and oc it, than pay for an unlocked mulitiplier. But you still see Alienware selling $5K boxes (there's an Area 51 box with an i7-980, two 5970's in Xfire, but only 6 GB of 1333 DDR3, no SSDs, etc, for about $4K). There's always gonna be the uber-Apple-epeen clique with the cash to burn.

Last i heard Intel is going to start selling CPU's with an unlocked multi, I guess to compete with AMD's BE x2's. But for now it will only be possible with a few dualies, hopefully in the future we will be able to purchase unlocked i7's making it easier to overclock.

Two more cores of what I already have. Meh. As for the Intel CPU it costs way too much. I probably won't be interested in getting a new CPU till Bulldozer comes out.

Independent of the price, I always prefer AMD for price/performance, so, I would go for the X6, but I think that a six-core isn't necessary for games, with 4 cores is more that enough.

I would agree with the first part AMD = Bang for buck! Second part games will soon enough need a quad at minimal requirments and a six core soon enough.

Put in 6 cores...

By the time my 9950 can bottleneck a good single card I am sure more games will be more multithreaded... so nice and easy upgrade.
