Would you consider this a good first build?

For a tip, use pcpartpicker so it's easier for people to check it out. I've done it for you this time so it's easier for everyone:
It's a good build don't let anyone change your mind on that. As long as you feel you need everything on that list your solid.
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($233.97 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($129.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Kingston Beast 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory ($154.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($79.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5"...
If you grab another 8 GB stick of RAM, and pop that into your third slot, you can take full advantage of DDR3 memory (as Windows 8 can support up to 128 GB). Otherwise it seems ok, but if you are looking for "high quality" gaming, then it might be worth while looking into getting the R9 290X rather than the 280X, though both will operate good, the 290X would give you a more long term high performance, as it is newer, and most PC games operate on the most up to date hardware.

The build in it's current state will do justice, but if you can expand the budget a bit, take what I said into consideration.

Unfortunately i can't accommodate a 290X due to budget, otherwise i really would love to get one. Thank you for your feedback though.

not all the parts are available on PCPartpicker otherwise i would...
