I have no issue with that. I was only pointing out that Nvidia shows faster results in those Id Software titles because of their double z buffer per clock.

People should buy video cards based on what they want to play. If you play Counter-Strike at 800x600 or 1024x768 then a super fast 512MB graphics card is not for them. If you want to play Elder Scrolls: Oblivion with all of the features turned on and on a 30" Dell or Apple display, you need a $2,000 set of graphics cards. One choice is not better than the other per se... just different purchasing decisions based on different needs as you have pointed out.

Soundz like o hell of a bargain, If U can tell me where to getr a x1800xt 512mb, I'm all ears, so far, cheking around the internet,a x1800xt 512mb ver. is nowhere near $330 :? But if there is a significant performance difference between the 256mb and the 512mb ver of the x1800xt, yes I am willing to buy the 512mb vers.
besides the 512mb version will last me many years to come

Also the 7800GTX 512MB has a 54 Gb/s mem bandwidth versus the 7800GTX 256MB which has a 38 Gb/s mem bandwidth.

I would recommend the X1800XT at $290, awesome deal. With the games I play, which include many of the newer ones, its a good grab.

Well, I like the INQ a lot, but their results won't sway me over Firingsquad and Digitlife combined. They aren't exactly a review site nor have the best accuracy/trust rating. Firing squad the X1800XT wins, and Digitlife the X1800XT beats a 459/1300 7800GTX (vs 450/1310 for 7900GT) in every max playable game except Riddick. http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/digest3d/index0511.html

But it's also good to consider that drivers will change the results, so who is not to say the 7900GT's latest drivers helped it catch up.

im not sayin that the x1800xt is a bad card, its just that there must be a reason ati swayed from it for so long. and plus, the 7800gtx is only like 3-6 fps from the x1800xt, and the 7900gt provides that push. im no fanboy, but 7900gt is wat u call a consumer friendly card; 1 slot cooling, more efficient, and bang for the buck. all that a person needs in a mid range gaming rig

i will question Digitlife's bias... if every review i have read has the x1800xt come out equal to the 7900GT. The only way we can really see who the superior is, is to wait for the optimized drivers for the 7600/7900 series cards. X1800XT has had supported drivers for a while now, 7900 doesn't. So buy whichever you like better, there basically equal.

For my money i like the 7900GT great overclocker w/o drivers(above), single slot cooling, smaller than x1800xt, uses less power which means less heat. Just my opinion.

Well, I can tell you that a oc'ed 7900 GT beats a 1800XT by a very small margin. Both are great cards. The 1800 XT 512 mb is a better choice and is cheap at newegg. The 7900 Gt is a better overclocker by far, I have mine clocked at 580MHZ core (from 450) and 1600MHZ memory (from 1320). Mine is probably neck and neck with any 1800 XT because of the OC. With a little voltage increase you can get the 7900 GT to insane speeds. cheeck this out.... http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=3437&s=2, and thats on air cooling. I have a zalman vf700 on mine but i have no idea how to volt mod. I plan on getting a 1900 XT to. I don't know about the 1900 Xt overclockability though, from what ive seen the 1900 xts arn't that good at overclocking.

Well from what i hear, you cant overclock it not even a notch, it just so happens that my bro just bought one 2 days ago and overclocked it 755/1.92) I was amazed on how much he had overclocked it! And this is with just the stock cooler!! temps read 45c idle 68c on full load, talk about a major OC!! I'm very jelous, i'm planning on purchasing a x1800xt512mb edition soon, with some luck  only problem is that my parents see in no need to uprage my radeon 9800pro  but I got all my other parts in my closet hidden from their view.
I wonder if my bro had a watercooling kit, how much more can he oc his x1900xt?? just curious 8O

check out how 7800gtx 512mb jump pver x1800xt 512mb by 20% in half-life lost coast :

http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=h2k5512&page=7

F.E.A.R ..7800GTX also wins by a far lead ...
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=h2k5512&page=8

in call of duty 2 ..the performance is near ..but still 7800gtx 512 is the top :
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=h2k5512&page=9

DOOM3 : of course this game is for 7800gtx with no doubt :
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=h2k5512&page=10

so X1800XT cann't destroy 7800GTX 512MB ...because 7800GTX 512MB takes the lead !!!

Gamepc ?? LOL, yeaaaah ooookay. Let's stick with the real sites, like guru3d, tomshardware, firingsquad.

The x1800xt is way ahead in my opinion because it outperforms the 7800gtx and 7900gt by as much as 30% in games like Fear and call of duty 2 - And it kills these cards in the newest benches from Oblivion, which In my opinion, is "THE" benchmark currently and one of the best games ever created by far. Oblivion performance can now be the sole determiner of the true winner, because it's the only current game that brings even the newest cards to their knees easily. The x1800xt even beats the 7900gtx in some instances , OUCH.

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/oblivion_high-end_performance/page3.asp

WINNER: x1800xt ,hands down.
