My x2 4400 is almost 3 years old now, and its been stable @ 2398 / 218 ever since, im looking to push it though, maybe even kill it by running it stable at stupid high temps. See how much i can push out of it before i upgrade to an 8 core, even thought thats probably 2 years away i could probably use a break from the computer world.

I have been reading this thread among others for inpiration for tips and to see what others have done to overclock. My specs are as follows:

Mobo: MSI K8N neo4-f
CPU: amd 4800+ x2 toledo
RAM: OCZ Platinum ddr400 4gb

So far I have been able to accomplish a little over 3Ghz completely stable. I am very comfortable with these settings and thought that I would share with anyone curious.

I first started off by lowering my memory clock. IMO this should always be your first step to overclocking b/c once you start overclocking the fsb the memory goes up with it. I found that a speed of 166Mhz worked well for me. I found that pushing the HT over 1000 gave me stability issues so I kinda want to say as a rule of thumb keep this value as close to 1000 as possible. B/c of the HT > 1000 stability issues I chose to lower the HT multi down to 4x. I then increased the fsb to 240. What you will notice is that my ddr clock increased back to 200Mhz. I can get higher speeds with my ram but have determined that it is best to stay around where the memory is rated at. This gives me a cpu clock of 2880Mhz. After booting and trying to run 3dmark06 I was running into bsod and memory dumps. Increasing my memory voltage by 0.05v fixed this. 3dmark06 then ran fine untill the cpu test, the program would crash but windows would be fine. I then went to my vcore and increased it to 1.43. I ran 3dmark06 again and cpu test ran for a while then it crashed again. Increasing the vcore to 1.483v fixed this problem. I then enabled the dynamic overclocking bios function that came with the mobo. I set it to overclock 7% and ran 3dmark06 again and whaallaaa! I am running over 3Ghz with a max temp of only 49 C. I have a zalman cooler and highly recommend this brand for air cooled systems. I was thinking about posting my ram timings but figured that everyone's config will be different.

I have oc'd a bunch of processors and am impressed with these chips. I definately know I can push this chip further but I'm gunna have to pull out 2Gb or ram to do it I think. Hope this helps anyone trying to oc the 4800+ toledo.

I'm new to overclocing AMD chips. I'd like to mildly oc my 4800+. What temp monitoring application do you use? What are the max safe temps?
I just changed my BIOS on my ASUS mobo to enable dynamic oc (AI NOS) and enabled up to 5% oc. Running prime95 right now and using CPUID Hardware Monitor my Core 0 temp is max of 58c & core 1 is max of 54c. Core speed is 2520. Whoops.... Just had a error.
Thanks for explaining how you did it. Steve

Steve,
I am very new to OC'ing.

I use Core Temp for temp monitoring. http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

I think 60 C would be as high as you would want to go. Even then....I really don't want my chip over 55 running at 100%.
In fact I think it will crash before getting to 60.

Anyhow I have a 939 4800 x2, 4gb of Kingston and Mushkin ddr 400 mhz ram.
theses settings have got me loaded up...but...i would not call it entirely stable.
217 x 12, 1.45 v, 3-3-3-8 2t, and HT is set at 4.
