(X58 Platform + i7 980x) = enough for GTX970 SLI or one GTX 980 TI?

So I'm planing to sell my two HD7950's while they are still worth a few cents and get two GTX970's or one GTX 980 TI, will my system be bottlenecked with those puppies ?

System specs:

i7 980x (6cores) @ 4.2ghz / 16gb dd3 / Asus Rampage 3 / 2560x1440 monitor

My cpu is almost 4 and a half years old but I still don't see it go above 50% usage in all games I've played so far.. if it can handle two 970's or one GTX 980 TI, it will last another year or two !

I think you will be fine with your current CPU.
For the card, I suggest you to get a single card, it will give you less heat, less power consumption, less problem. Plus, you can always add another single card later when you think you need more power on it.

i dare say the cpu oced a little it will handle 2x 980ti's This is of course dependent on your PSU

The CPU should be able to run a GTX 980Ti. Definitely get a single 980 Ti rather than 2 970's in SLI.
