X850pro vs 1600pro

I currently have a ATI radeon X700 card and am upgrading for the game Oblivion. I still have an agp motherboard and I am not changing to PCI express just yet. I can get either an ATI X850pro 256mb or an ATI 1600pro 512mb at similar pricing. Which do you think is a better card?

Not too sure of benchmark performance, but keep in mind that ATI's 1x00xx line fully supports DX9c (Shader 3.0). Will come in handy as more and more games comming out are using it.

the x850 pro is better, but doesnt supposrt SM3. When games will need SM3 , u wont be able to run them. So go for X1600 PRO

stick with the x850 pro, the x1600 may have 512mb which is pointless for a card that cant perform 2 the max. the xtra ram is a waste. Even if sm 3.0 comes out anytime soon, the x1600 will perform just like a 9800 pro. Stick with the x850 pro, for there will not be any games running on sm3.0 so enjoi the games and glory for the next year or so. The 512 mb of ram on the x1600 is just to get ppl to purchase a card that will not perform to your specs. Like I say stick w/ the x850 pro. If sm 3.0 is a must have 2 play future games. go w/ the x1800 series or better the x1900 series, truth is, U need 2 have serious cash if planning 2 purchase these cards.

It's already out, and it's extensively used in many games, especially Oblivion, the game in question.

The plain X1600 might, but the X1600Pro is better than the R9800XT, let alone Pro.

Stick with the x850 pro, for there will not be any games running on sm3.0 so enjoi the games and glory for the next year or so.

Except for the game she mentioned she's specifically upgrading for.

If she were considering an X800GTO2 or an X800XT/XL versus the X1600Pro then I'd say she should go for the additional power over the additional features, but considering the proximity of these two cards, and how crippled the X850Pro is anyways it performs near the plain X800GTO which isn't too far from the X1600Pro in shader heavy apps like Oblivion. So this is to me close to a tie, and in the case of a tie, the tie breaker is features. I'd agree with you on the memory since neither card is really a high resolution high settings king, but even as slow as the memory is on the X1600Pro I think you'll find neither card would be playble at high setting at a high enough resolution to matter.

i bought 1600pro and had nothing but problems. i took it back and got bfg 7800gs. its the best you can get for agp right now. dont buy 1600pro youll regret it. its too much for too little.
