X99 Phoenix SLI

I am moving from an SLI setup to a single card, and would like to move my card away from my huge air cooler if at all possible.

Would the second PCI-E slot (PCIEX16_2) still run at x16 speed if I put my card there? Or do I have to use the top slot? I haven't been able to find a very specific answer anywhere online, so anything would be helpful.

Specs are:
- Gigabyte X99 Phoenix SLI (Rev 1.0)
- 6850k
- 980 ti
- 16GB RAM
- Don't think anything else is relevant?

Since the Intel Core I7-6850K has 40 PCIE lanes (as opposed to just 28), I believe, the PCIEX16_2 slot would still run at x16 speeds. However, all documentation states if you're running just a single card set up, that card *should* be installed in PCIEX16_1.
