X99 taichi won't detect M.2 NVMe

I just put my new PC together and I'm trying to install Windows 10 on my XPG-SX8200 M.2 Nvme gen3x4 SSD, but I can not get the BIOS to detect my M.2 drive at all. I have tried putting in a different M.2 to see if I got a dead one (samsung970evo M.2) and it wouldn't detect it either so I think it's a board issue. I've already messaged support but while I wait I thought I'd try here for help.

-Im running stock BIOS the board came with (P1.50)

-I tried the step-by-step guides out there and created a uefi bootable usb, disabled CSM in BIOS, booted windows and windows can't see the M.2 either.

-I can't find any driver support downloads

-I know the drive needs to be in the bottom M.2_2 slot because of my 28 lane 6800k

-I have no other drives plugged in. Just the single M.2 NVMe I want to install win10 on.

- BIOS system browser shows all my new components except for the M.2 drives.


I don't see any settings in the BIOS related to NVMe, and I don't see anywhere to enable the m.2 slots. I am at a complete loss here and I could really use some help

I had a similar issue wiht my motherboard too, i solved it by going to windows on my old ssd formated the m.2 ssd and then bios would see it. In my case the m.2 had to be formated and partioned to be visible.

How did you go to your old SSD to format your new SSD? My BIOS is not detecting the new M.2 so I don't know how to format something that isn't being detected. I loaded windows on my sataSSD to see if the m.2 would be detected by win10, no luck. I went and bought a Samsung 970evo m.2 to try in the slot and it too is not being detected.

Mount the m.2, boot windows from what drive you used earlier (i have an evo 860 sata 3 and m.2 960 evo), i mounted the 960 evo, booted windows from 860 evo and formated the 960 (format inside windows) after that the bios would see the 960.

Windows is not detecting my m.2 when I load win10. Distpart isn't listing it either. I'm not sure how I am supposed to format the M.2 when it's not being detected. I don't have an old PC that I can try to format the m.2 on, as it doesn't take m.2 ssd

The latest bios is 1.8 though the improvement over 1.5 relates apparently to updating cpu support.

A BIOS flash to 1.8 was one of the very first things I tried to do. I flashed successfully and the m.2 slot still shows nothing populating it.
I see no setting in BIOS for NVMe what so ever, no settings to enable the m.2_1 or m.2_2 slot.

If I plug a something into a SSATA3 port shared with my M.2, the BIOS will show the device as populating the m.2 slots, and the sata port as Empty.

I bought a Samsung 970 m.2 and it too was not being detected, so I'm guessing it's a motherboard issue?

Time to RMA I guess.

Would the fact I'm only running 2 sticks of RAM and not quad have any impact on the CPU lanes or M.2 functionality? I know quad channel is ideal but I didn't think it was necessary

No, memory structure is not the problem. The board manufacturer is the problem. The issue of boards not recognizing NVMe drives is the most common storage topic on this forum. Of course for every problem board there must be multiple numbers of success.( I have one working here ). If it's seated properly and you cannot try another NVMe in that M2 slot ( to determine is it the board, the drive, the time of the month, whatever ) then RMA it.

But you are not alone!

Perhaps Its time to stand up and yell, "I am mad as hell and I'm not gonna take this anymore".

I already tried another brand new m.2 (samsung 970evo) and it too wasn't being detected, so I'm pretty sure it's not a bad M.2 drive.

My contact with Asrock support was very short and they only asked me to try 1 thing and then told me to RMA.

Perhaps is a BIOS issue, flash BIOS to 1.8 and try in M.2_1 slot.

My response:
The manual says M.2_1 slot only supports SATA type m.2 with my 28 lane cpu. I'm trying to install a NMVe PCIe gen3x4 so I don't think it will work there, but I'll try anyway.

In the next email they asked me to RMA the board.

I filled out the RMA request form online and im now waiting for approval and an RMA #. This is all Very frustrating, but hopefully everything will work out in the end. FingersCrossed

I sent the board off to Asrock RMA department in Chino, CA today. I will come back here and update if the new/refurbished board they send me solves my m.2 detection issues. Wish me luck

UPDATE:

My replacement x99 taichi came today from Asrock. The M.2 was detected right off the bat this time, zero issues. It took about 2 weeks to get my new/referb motherboard but my PC is up and running and every thing seems to be working as it should for now, knock on wood.

I found a temp soultion. My problem is similar. But i have another type (WD S50062X0C-00L350). I lost 3 days. What I managed to solved. Re-install windows image with macrium reflect. That's what I put into my nvme 2th slot. Windows 10 loads but bugs. I got it fixed for Windows and work with ssd.
