Xbox 360 backup for laptop?

Can I use my Xbox 360 500GB hard drive as a external backup for my laptop, but also still be able to keep and use the Xbox files for the Xbox?

Also can I use the Xbox 360 hard drive as a typical external hard drive?

Also can I partition the hard drive for this purpose?

This is because I want to do a complete reinstall of windows and have no other external hard drive to save my files.

ok, what about backing up the xbox then using the xbox hard drive as a single backup drive for the Xbox while still connected to the Xbox?

You want to backup the xbox and then use the drive to backup the same xbox which now doesn't have a drive in it?

I'm going to refer you to an xbox forum as the xbox file system is not natively compatible with a pc but they do have some working solutions.
