I've had my controller for 6 months now. It was working perfectly till one day I plugged it in and my computer did not recognize it.

In the device manager it comes under Universal Serial Bus Controller as Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request failed).

When I plug it in the light on it flashes for a second and turns off.

I've tried removing the Xbox 360 controller from the device manager and plugging in my controller again but it did not work.

I tried forcing the driver but the Xbox Accessories option does not appear in the list of drivers on my computer. I'm currently running Windows 10 64bit (latest version available).

Solution
Well, unless it's a loose connection I'm back to my original suggestion. If a RESTORE POINT fails or is not an option here's how to do an in-place upgrade.

1. MS media creation tool
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

2. insert a 4GB or higher USB stick or DVD-R

3. Download the tool and run it. Point to the USB stick or DVD.
- It's about 3.5GB I believe if you just have the 64-bit ISO. (there's a 32/64-bit version too which you don't need.)

4. Once the USB or DVD has been created run "setup.exe" from it, right from Windows

5. *Choose the option to keep your PROGRAMS and your DATA
- don't put in a key if prompted. Microsoft sorts that out.

6. Wait for it to finish. It is basically replacing a lot of code as...

Tried it
Didn't work

And this is an official Microsoft controller, right? Try different ports and see if that helps. Honestly, the drivers should already be installed.

It's an official one I'm sure
I just don't understand why it won't work on my PC
I tried another third party controller on my PC and it was working just fine

That may point to some data corruption in Windows (hopefully not a deeper issue).

Since it works on other computers, and drivers are native to W10 (and download does not help), AND you tested other ports that's the only conclusion I can currently draw.

Except for perhaps if it's a LOOSE CONNECTION for the controller and it works intermittently which may explain why it worked in a different PC.

SO...
At this point unless I think of something else I suggest two things:

#1) Rollback to the earliest RESTORE POINT prior to the issue (if you have one... also it will list what programs are affected so note that as it may be too much hassle if to early)
or

#2) an in-place Upgrade of Windows 10.
- this is actually pretty easy but I'll post this then explain below in another post.

I'm going to delay though as this doesn't feel like the issue either.

6. Wait for it to finish. It is basically replacing a lot of code as it's "upgrading" to itself.
- I used this a couple times in the first six months to fix some issues
- it's relatively benign and shouldn't cause any issues

7. Run MICROSOFT UPDATES until no more updates exist
- left-click Start Menu-> settings-> update and security

8. Test

9. *Whenever you get a properly working system, get a tool like Acronis True Image and create a backup IMAGE.
- I use Acronis TI with the following settings:
a) Incremental (a "chain" of full, compressed backup + four, smaller incremental links)
b) VERIFY (immediately, and monthly)
c) Compression is high
d) CLEANUP (I allow one chain. I backup WEEKLY so every FIVE WEEKS it starts a new chain then deletes the old files)

The new 2017 version changed the interface a lot, and the program also adds folder backup and phone backup capabilities too.
