Alrighty, so I have spent my time this evening looking over the internet, and I found many answers for this issue, all pointing to me ethernet port being fried...but none seem to have a story quite like mine.

My xbox is about five and a half years old, got it for Christmas in 2008. It hasn't connected to Xbox Live ONCE since November 2012, and spent about 6 or 7 months untouched. I started playing it again, and just this evening, decided to connect it to the internet again so I could recover my old gamertag on a USB drive I was using for memory (which I was forced to use because after my while away from using my xbox, the Hard Drive actually stopped working entirely. Had to switch to a USB to save anything at all.). Well, needless to say, it was just my luck to see that the ethernet cable wasn't being recognized as being plugged into my Xbox. There's nothing wrong with the cable, I can assure that. It's worked in the three other devices I have plugged into to just fine. It's just choosing not to work with the 360, which tells me that, from the internet, my ethernet port is busted.

What I dont get, is that it seems this only happens due to a power surge of some sort. There hasn't been an ethernet plugged into this xbox in well over a year and a half, and yet, the ethernet port seems to be busted? When my live ran out in 2012 and I lost the ability to play it due to someone staying in my home and occupying the room it was in, the ethernet was taken right out. There was never an opportunity for a power surge to affect it because there was no cable actually plugged in.

Basically, I guess the ethernet port is fried or I am missing some hidden option on how to fix this....but it doesn't make sense as to how it could have happened. My xbox is OLD, thats for sure. Not as old as some others, but old none-the-less. I've already said to myself that this isn't worth spending money on any further, but I just ask...What could have happened...and what can I possibly still do for FREE?

Ask the guy who was in that room lol

On a serious note, was the X-Box still plugged in the mains during this time (when you weren't using it) or was it left completely unpowered?

It WAS plugged in to a power strip, yes. Albeit no ethernet cable was plugged into it, it was still receiving power even though it wasn't being used/turned on.

Hm... yeah I thought so.

Well, I'm not electronics expert that's for sure but if there was some eventual power surge during these months/years could have probably done some damage to it. I'm affraid I can't help you with an idea on how to fix it.

If you feel adventurous just open the thing up and take a peek inside, maybe you could see some traces of damage? Not sure what to suggest. Sorry.

Its all good. Im currently past the caring point of fixing it because I can still play games, and I guess nothing is stopping me from taking my USB to someone's who xbox works and then putting my old account back on there along with games I downloaded. The main thing that really gets to me is just how it happened. It might be one of those mysterious occurrences that goes unsolved!
