The 360 hands down. The controller is better and the games are so much better.

One thing u have to think about though is the Cell. It has like 7 activated processors on it. The PS3 has much more power than the 360, just current game developers don't know how to utilize it. The PS3 is a better choice for the future. The 360 is getting an update called Jasper which will basically solve all the RRoD problems by reducing the nm size of the graphics card, which was the heart of the problem. Wait until Jasper.

Also, if money isn't an object, why do u not want it for only a few games?
 


Yes the cell is better than power pc core in the 360, but the GPU in the ps3 is much worse than that of the 360. Oh and if you were wandering the 360 has 6 threads running on its processor as well, but i dont want to get into the techinical differences between the 2. The cell if programmed right for merely makes up the difference for the lack of GPU power in the ps3...in relation to the 360. Once again, do not buy into the marketing hype...of either system.

I'm also wondering about this. And, I can't fully decide. I'm edging on the 360 though. Anyone give me some advice for my situation?

First and foremost, I can't play online, so Live vs PSN doesn't matter.

Graphics I don't care hugely for, I don't have a HD TV.

Blu-Ray is sorta edging me towards the PS3, although I don't have an HD TV, and I don't buy movies much. That said, aren't PS3 games on Blu-Ray, 360 still on DVD?

I would guess in the long run, once developers work out how to get the most out of the PS3, it will be more powerful. But ATM, they are even.

The 360 controller feels nice, plus I can use it on PC.

And, of course, the 360 is cheaper, and the games are cheaper.

The main thing for me are the actual games. I do most gaming on my PC, especially FPSs/RTSs, but some I prefer consoles (racing, fighting, action etc normally). I'm mainly getting one for GTA4 and Soul Caliber 4, which are on both. PS3 has some good exclusive games (Uncharted for example) and many more upcoming (GT5, Killzone 2, MGS4, Haze, Time Crisis 4). 360 has some pretty good exclusives (from what I've heard) already, such as Halo 3, Gears of War (although I'd get it on PC), Forza and many more.

Thoughts?
 


If I were in your situation I would probably go with the 360. I can tell you already atleast prefer the controller and there are more games for it. Also, in general...right now, when a game is made for both consoles and released at a similar time for both it generally is made better for the 360 due to the ease of programming in comparison to ps3.

I wouldn't expect any real price difference between the games on the systems as they both sell their games for $60.

There are many good exclusives for both, but more currently that are out for the 360 and as you said the system is marginally cheaper. The blueray would be a plus for a few reasons. 1.) Blue ray, 2.) upscaling of old dvd's, but you not having an HDTV negates that, but if your looking into it for the future then well this may be something you may want to think about in your decision.

I have both consoles and love both, but the 360 currently is a better choice if you are going with just one imo. Forza is awesome by the way lol. I cant wait to see what GT5 has in store for us. I hope Forza 3 visually is as good as GT5 since I personally believe that the Forza team has the physics part of the game down the best, but I could be proved wrong in the next installment of GT.

I am very tempted by the 360. I think the only real thing pushing me the PS3 way is the fact that it's Blu-Ray (movies, plus in theory better games) and that it does have more processing power, so eventually, in theory, better games.

BTW, in the UK the prices are ~£30 for 360 and ~£40 for PS3, or at least what I've seen.
 
Probably too late to influence your decision by now.

I would get a PS3 without a doubt because it can double up as a Blu-ray player.

And I hate Microsoft ... sorry 🙁 Besides, it is time for Sony to finally win the format war.
 
I really like my 360 - even though I just got a high-spec pc.

I had to return a couple of 360s to be repaired but it's totally free and only takes a week or 2. When it works, it works - I haven't experienced lock-ups whilst in the middle of a game.

I don't think my 360 gets very noisy / hot. Just keep it in a ventilated area. The newer 360s being released now should be even better than mine (as they will have the smaller die CPU, which generates less heat). I think the Elite is not produced anymore and the Premium has turned into the Elite.

The PS3 is has a very strange processor (CELL). Many developers say that the 360 is much easier to develop for - easier to make the most of it's assets.

There is a Blu-Ray add-on coming for 360 soon.
 
A Blu-Ray addon? That sounds good. Maybe they'll be able to make games on it too? *Hopeful thinking* But then again, why would Microsoft use Sony tech? I suppose now HD-DVD has died they don't really have a choice.

Hmm. Now the question is if I can hold off buying a 360 until the new one (with built-in Blu-Ray) comes out. Which would be after GTA4 and SC4. Damnit.
 
I'm an avid PC and console gamer, for me the obvious choice is the PS3 if you have a gaming quality PC. The reason for this being my choice, which I'm going to purchase sometime during the summer when I don't have classes. Here are my reasons why.

1. The PS3 has both Native HDMI and Wireless capabilities with the 40GB $399 model, in order to get the same out of the 360 you'd need to buy the Elite edition ($449) and the Xbox wireless adapter ($89)

2. Blu-ray playback. Plain and simple, Blu-ray has pretty much won the format war and to even get HD playback on the 360 I would have to dish out 449+89+89(was $179 before HD-DVD died)

3. Most good Xbox exclusives come out for PC, which is my gaming platform of choice for most games, especially RPG and FPS games. Where as more games that don't come out for PC come out for PS3 (Japanese game makers especially)

4.Wireless Rock Band -pretty much the main reason I'm getting a console is to play Rock Band, wires would be annoying as hell when having the full setup going.

If you don't have a gaming worthy PC, than the Xbox 360 is a more lucrative choice. Also, depending on your age, Xbox Live is good. I can't stand it personally, too many annoying 12-year olds screaming into the mic.
 
This is a tough decision however with the price of the PS3 ($499) I would rather get a 360 ($350) and a Wii ($250) for a hundy more. You will be able to play far more games then you would with the PS3 by it's self.

I own all 3 (I'm lucky I know) and I will say the PS3 is a killer blu-ray player/dvd up converter but for games... I'm still waiting!!!

I'm sure M$ will add a BD player, the question is at what cost? Under $200 I think it's in great shape over $200 and I think the 360 becomes a harder sell.

Just my 2 cents.

Flame if you must but honestly I don't care which system comes out on top. I still don't know why people must only pick one to like. Single minded I guess.

The 3 ring of death issue that "plagued" the 360 is not an issue with the latest hardware rev which has been out for almost a year now. I wouldn't use that as a reason not to buy one. Plus M$ still gives you a 3 year warranty which is 100x better than the wii or ps3 90 day warranty.

Lots of bad info in these posts. 360 Premium has had "native" HDMI support for almost a year now.

Anyone want to tell me what "Native HDMI" is? I know a lot about HDMI and i've never knew there was an HDMI that wasn't "Native". Just busting your balls man I know what you meant.
 
Native means without the use of adapter (Mostly applies to PC), and I didn't know that the Premium now supports HDMI, due to my brother saying that he bought the Elite because of the HDMI adapter. Anyways, my point still stands, even if it is less significant than it was before. Thanks for clearing that up though Livingdead.
 
As an owner of both systems I'd have to say I prefer my PS3.

The PS3 is more expensive but then again, the Xbox is only cheaper because you have to buy everything separately. Separate wireless controller, separate hd-dvd drive, separate wireless network dongle, Xbox live subscription, etc. Not to mention that the hardware is older and not as good.

The interface on the PS3 is better. The xbar is far cleaner and easier to user than the Xbox dashboard. The PS3 console itself is far better looking. And the controller - The xbox (original) controller was absolutely awful and they improved it for the 360 by making it more like the PS controllers - but then switched the left stick with the dpad for "originality" which is just awkward and un-necessary looking. The 360 controller just feels like one of those 3rd party cheap versions of a PS controller.

There are less games for the PS3 for now - but that's only because the Xbox has been out for longer and all new games on the market or coming soon are coming out for both systems (with obvious exceptions).

Then there's the whole hd-dvd/bluray thing - as has been decided over the last week, hddvd is out and bluray won that fight. But that's only relevant if you pay the extra 200 euro for a hddvd on your 360.

Xbox live is better than PSN. For now. But then, it's a paid service. Sure it's only $50 a year but I've had my xbox for over 2 years now. That's a $100 difference in cost between the 2 systems already.

And then there's the hardware problems. The failure rate of 360s is still 1 in 6 consoles. And even when they don't completely fail they have multiple other problems. Most recently, mine keeps telling me that I need to put the games I'm trying to play into a Xbox 360 to be able to play them. Yeah, really. Haven't had a single problem with the PS3.

 


My coworker got that a few days before it RROD'd, he got his xbox for xmas, lasted 3 and a half weeks, and he doesn't play games that much.
 
I've been lucky so far with the rrod - but maybe that's about to change. It's funny - I've actually found myself saying "I'm due an RROD cause I haven't had one yet" which is just ridiculous really. My brother's on his 4th xbox in 8 months now.

I feel like i'm defending the 360 even though i'm not trying to.

The 360 comes with a wireless controller just like the PS3. And yes the both use blue tooth for the controller tech. So when someone tries to say the PS3 uses RF tell them to get lost.

As far as FPS, the 360 and PS3 are about equal. PS3 has a slight edge overall but there are areas were the cell does better and areas where the 3 cores of the 360 does better. The "older hardware" comment is pointless since both M$ and $ony are already on new revs from there original hardware design. Console makers constantly update there hardware to reduce costs so you can almost never say "old hardware".
 
From someone who owns neither currently, but intends to in the future. I am getting it based on the winner of the next gen format war (blu-ray) Looks like HD-DVD is cooked. Occationally a game strictly comes out for console I cant pass up, I never really owned more than 10 or so games for ps2 since I bought it in 2001, but always justified it because it played the games I did want and served as a dvd player. I primarily play games on the PC, but have a softspot for fighting/racing games on the console. i dont even care/nor like racing or cars but love gran turismo , so go figure. So primarily at this point console titles I am looking forward to are street fighter 4 and gran turismo. Maybe the new star wars game if it doesnt end up porting to pc. Anyway it will always serve as a blu ray player.
 
The best Star Wars games are always come out for Nintendo. That and Zelda are the only reasons I owned a Game Cube (which i'm ashamed to admit).

I hope the new GT 5 is better/different than GT4. I felt like GT4 was just like 3 and 2 with more cars and tracks. They need to add things like damage, and better online play... err... I mean online play. That's still my biggest bitch with the PS3 is the online game play is poor to ok. Though it's better then the Wii's non-existent online gameplay.

Anyone else having issues getting PS3 games from gamefly? I have 8 in my queue and i've gotten one and I had to remove all my Wii and 360 games to get the one!!! Shipping with GF has been slow lately too which has been ticking me off.
 
It's only speculation. Keep an eye out on the news.

Some of us here at TG have thrown around ideas about an X360 vs PS3 vs Wii article, and it looks like it's something we should post. But honestly, it's a hard choice between the three if you're a true console gamer. The X360 has the best OS interface in my opinion, throwing everything on "pages" for easy access. But because of its known hardware issues of overheating, I can't tell you to run out and buy it.

I can't really tell you to run out and buy a PS3 either. As I just bought the console not even a week ago, I love the way I can control it remotely with my PSP, and while I like the user interface on the PSP, I find the PS3 version (which is basically the same) highly annoying. The PlayStation Network Store is clunky and doesn't offer actual movies, TV shows etc. I've had problems staying connected to the PlayStation Network via the wireless adapter, and I'm seriously considering using ethernet. On the plus side, you can install an OS (Linux so far) and upgrade the hard drive yourself. It will accept a mouse and keyboard input, making it the closest to a PC out of the three. Lets not forget Blu-Ray, the chosen winner of the HD formats.

But as for the Wii, I have no complaints other than the kiddie-oriented library. You won't find Oblivion, Unreal Tournament III, BioShock or many other high-profile games, but you do have access to Mario, Zelda and whatnot. The remote and nunchuck really make this console shine, and I actually prefer them over the X360 and PS3 controllers. You would be surprised at how "comfortable" the Wii controllers play despite their shapes.
 
MS would be insane to not develop a bluray player for the 360.

And MS is always sane.

Except for Vista, that was insane.

You can connect any USB keyboard to the Xbox 360 and it works immediately - don't know about a mouse though.
