XBox and Laptop using same monitor

Hello everyone!

I recently bought an XBox One and connected it to my external monitor (Asus VG248QE) using an HDMI to HDMI cable. However, I also want to connect my laptop to the same monitor. My monitor has an HDMI (being used by XBox), DVI, and Display port. On the other hand, my laptop has an HDMI and a VGA. How can I go about connecting my laptop to the monitor? It was a pain in the ass to keep changing the HDMI cables and I'm afraid it will damage the ports if I keep switching them everyday.

Buy a HDMI switch. Or if you don't need sound from the laptop, a HDMI to DVI adapter.

I have my headphone plugged into my monitor's audio jack because my laptop's audio jack is broken.

If I were to use this HDMI switch, how do I control what will show on the monitor (assuming both my laptop and Xbox are connected to the monitor)
