I am planning a workstation build that will also be used for gaming. I have decided on the Xeon E3-1220 v3 as my CPU, and am looking for an H97 motherboard to go with it. The circumstances require that the board be mini-ITX. Currently, I have my eyes on the Asus H97i-PLUS motherboard. I have been able to somewhat confirm compatibility, but am seeking a definite answer ASAP. Thank you!

It is on the official CPU Support List. Some features, such as ECC memory are not available on that motherboard.

I too wondered about this 'some features' thing at the end: "*Intel Xeon Processor Family is designed for servers. Some features may not support when installed on 8 series chipsets. For more details, refer to ASUS support site at http://support.asus.com."

I contacted their support but still haven't been given an answer. I have a Z97 Pro (wifi-ac). I would hope it's only the error checking/correcting, but don't know/can't tell.

So after some consideration, I have hopped onboard with the Xeon E3-1231 v3 recommendation, as I can afford it and it has the advantage of hyperthreading. It is essentially a locked i7-4770 without iGPU, as I understand.

The lack of ECC memory support aligns with my research, and is absolutely no problem. I actually already have the memory taken care of (2x8GB 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 DDR3) and do not need ECC functionality. I really appreciate the help!

Well - as I noted - I don't know if that's the only thing 'wrong'/'incompatible' with the setup!!! I can't get any 'straight' answer from anyone! I haven't 'delved' into CPU or System architecture in many, many years so that's why I went with the i7-4790K in my system.

''Some features may not support when installed on 8 series chipsets.''

like ecc memory is not supported on desktop but is on server and that's something not of great importance

''ECC Memory Supported indicates processor support for Error-Correcting Code memory. ECC memory is a type of system memory that can detect and correct common kinds of internal data corruption. Note that ECC memory support requires both processor and chipset support.''

the zeon supports more but the desktop chipsets don't support what the server boards will - no big deal

also xeon don't have ipg so you need a vid card or onboard graphics [like server boards have ]

most part is xeon chips are overclockable like -K- chips all you got to look at on the boards your interested in is there cpu support list to see if the xeons are supported on that board

example [my board has support for 24 xeons chips ]
