There are advantages about both. The advantages of the Xeon are that it's ~$90 cheaper than the i7. It also supports Error Correcting Code RAM. The i7 has two more cores and an unlocked multiplier. Also, it has integrated graphics, but the Xeon doesn't.

I would recommend getting the Xeon only if money is an issue, but with an X99 platform, you're going to spend lots of money. The i7 will have superior single threaded and multithreaded performance, especially when overclocked.

The i7 5820k does NOT have integrated graphics.

I'd immediately recommend the i7, although I prefer AMD. AMD's Xeon chips were made for servers, although they would work on for a normal PC, there will be some issues.

There is no such thing as an AMD Xeon. I have no idea what you're talking about.

To answer the original question, no I would not bother with any of the quad core e5 Xeons for the X99 socket. The biggest two reasons to even build on the X99 platform is for more cores and more PCIe lanes. Unless you need more than 2 video cards, I would stick with the LGA1150 platform and a traditional i7 like the 4790k.

Well if you really need a 2x16 SLI go for the Xeon but the 5820k is better in everything else, more cache, more cores/threads, it's unlocked(and it can be OC to a 4Ghz stable with the according cooling) and the price difference isn't that big maybe only 30$. You can find very good prices online.

I get the feeling you didnt even check what CPUs the OP was talking about...
