I know that Server ram (ECC RAM) will not work in a desktop, but what if I put a modded lga771 xeon in my P5QL PRO... Will that work?

I'm also curious to why these ebay dealers keep sayng "amd only" on their ram ($20), and the ones that is not costs around $200.

I was only hoping to turn my old rig into a server with 16gb ram, and either use my Q9550 that I got in my HTPC and give that a e8500 instead. Or just buy a modded E5472

Update: the game I want to host is ark survival evolved

Solution
Both CPU and mobo have to support ECC for you to use it. If you have the Xeon already, then just pick up a new mobo to fit the chip. You can pick them up for pretty cheap nowadays for older chipsets.

thats what I thought about my Dell Optiplex 980 too, but somewhere along they integrated the microcodes in bios.

So all I have to do is mod the bios or get it confirmed wether microcode is there or not.

My question is, if the cpu supports ECC ram, does the motherboard have to support it too?

And is it worth the "extra" performance, "E5472 vs Q9550"
