Hi guys so I have an lga1156 socket (Asus p7h55-m) motherboard, so I just found about xeons which they are used for workstations 24/7 will it able to work on my motherboard it’s an Xeon x3470 it’s a bit faster then the i7 870 and close to the 880 also it’s cheaper, but will it work?

Solution

Some motherboards allow overclocking via BCLK, on the first gen Core it's 133mhz, after Sandy Bridge it was lowered to 100MHz.

Clock speed is BCLK x multiplier.

The Asus P55 boards use the P55 chipset which you can overclock with. If you have a Skype or Hangouts I can guide you through it.

Honestly though, get the X3470, I got mine off Amazon for $35.
According to the web, this chip is not among those supported by this mobo. It may be working but it may not.

Unless it is ridiculously cheap I would not advise you to invest money on this platform. The X3470 is worse than the Pentiul G5400 or the Ryzen 3 1200 which are the most basic Intel and Amd.

I have an X3470 in an ITX Intel board, same socket as you. I have it OC'd to 4.2Ghz and it has very respectable performance. I got mine for $35, very good value.

I say go for it.

Thank you guys for your help I really wanna get the 875k unlocked too, but I’m too lazy to save up for that much. I did see someone on YouTube use the same motherboard as me with the Xeon 3470, but I’m afraid it might not still work but it’s worth a try, I’ll get the processor and see how things turn out thank you very much guys.

Make sure you update the BIOS to the latest and reset the BIOS via onboard jumper after installing the new CPU.

So sorry it’s been 4 days I currently have the core i7 870 and new motherboard but performance is kids low for example, on fortnite on high settings with the gtx 1050 2gb it gets a constant 60fps or higher. But when I move to cities or look around it drops a lot like down to 30, and my gpu is using a 100 percent while my cpu is using about 20-30 percent under load could this be a cpu bottleneck or gpu bottleneck? Is it it I will try buy the Xeon 3470

My laptop has a GTX 1050 and I can run most games on High or Ultra - your 870 performs about as good as an i3 from 4 years ago. The X3470 is based off of the i7 870, but is generally higher binned and consumes less power. Changing the BCLK on a higher binned CPU generally yields better results. The Xeon also supports 32gb of memory versus the i7's 16GB limit.

If you want a really good performance comparison check out my Passmark CPU benchmark thread, I've got a Xeon X3450 up there. My X3450 gets about the same score my laptop's i5 gets, so imagine how good the X3470 will be.

The Xeons typically have higher IPC than their consumer counterparts which counts for their awesome performance.

My old Xeon E3 1240 was based off of the i7 2600 yet I was pulling overclocks people said should be impossible (106MHz BCLK on Sandy Bridge, pretty much uneard of). My i7 2600 gets about 8200, my E3 1240 got 8800 stock and 9200 overclocked.

In Task Manager/Performance/Resource Monitor see how many cores your game is actually using. 1 core at 80% = 20% CPU usage on a 4 core CPU.
Faster CPU, and faster RAM speed from an overclock helps with this. But you can try slightly lowering the resolution also. Instead of 1080P try 1600x900. It might move your old hardware away from a limit it's hitting.

I tried too but my monitor won't let me it keeps saying it will damage the screen whatever but im okay with 1080p, rn im having issues with the core i7 870 whenever i play games my clock core drops like every 10 min and it causes frame drops is there anyway i can fix this, i do have an great cooler its an cryorig h7 with mx-2 artic thermal paste. even under load cpu would never reach 60c
