Xeon on an intel d946gzis

Hello,,i have a mobo intel d946gzis and i was wondering,can a moded 775 lga xeon x5450 go on this motherboard?

Not necessarily. Socket 775 spanned several generations of CPU, and trying to use a Core 2 chip in a Pentium 4 board will not work. It will physically fit, but won't POST.

That said, the Xeon mod will likely not work on this board. The CPU support list states that the only Core 2 processors supported are the Celeron E1000, Pentium E2000 and Core 2 Duo E4400/4500/4600/4700. It does not seem to support either Quad cores or 45nm chips.

The general rule for the Xeon mod is that if your board supports the equivalent Core 2 processor to the Xeon you're trying to install, it will probably work.
In this case the Core 2 equivalent to the Xeon X5450 is the Core 2 Quad Q9650, which is not supported by the D946GZIS.

Also Intel motherboards are not known for their success with this mod, coupled with the lack of 45nm and QC support, as well as the ancient 946GZ chipset (too old to even be mentioned on the Xeon mod page) means I can say that it almost certainly won't work. If you want to run a modded Xeon such as that, you'll need a better motherboard.

I'm just going by what the people who made it say it supports. Besides, a Q6600 is very different to an X5450. One is an older 65nm chip designed for use in that socket, and the other is a newer 45nm design that isn't even for the socket. Now if you'd said someone got a Q9650 to run, that would be a bit more encouraging. The Xeon still will require a microcode update which isn't always easy on intel boards, and it could be that your board simply doesn't support the 1333MHz FSB the 45nm quads require.

In short, I don't know ow for certain, but all the evidence points towards it not working. It might end up working, but I sure as heck wouldn't put any money on it.

You are correct; that motherboard doesn't support 45nm processors, but the 65nm Xeon X3220 will work: http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel/D946GZIS.html
