Would two Xeon X5675 be any good for gaming vs a 4790k or 4960x or at all. And, am I right that they're also hyper threaded?
I've been offered a rig containing a pair on one board. I know games don't really utilise more than 4 cores yet but won't DirectX 12 help in that area?

Cheers.

Solution
it is an older arcuitecture, and it is only at 3.06 base and 3.46 boost, so it will perform worse compared to something like a 4790k, because the newer CPU is clocked faster (4.0 base 4.4 boost + its OCable), and has a more up to date arcuitecture, it will destroy the old xeon in gaming, but thats not to say that the xeon is a bad CPU. its still has 6 cores and 12 threads that more and more games are starting to use these days, so its a trade off. if the games is optimized to use more than 4 cores (like most new games these days), it will benefit. but the older arcuitecture and the slower clocks is still holding it back. while DX12 MIGHT help here, games need to support it, and no current game will magically work with this DX12...

sorry for the long explanation. I can get rambaly some times...

Thanks for the quick response.
I am aware only new games will start to implement DX12. Really, the single core architecture and speed of the 4790k and alike are the dominant factors it seams, at the moment. However, I've watched my cpu, a 4770k, barely hit 50% usage in games with everything maxed. Is it fair to say that cpu technology isn't really being fully exploited in games yet and that a much lesser cpu coupled with a good gpu will achieve the same results? By this I mean, 2x xeons that won't be fully effective (utilisin 24 threads) in games won't actually have any problems running them just as well as a 4790k?

thecnically, yes. you will have 24 threads, but NO modern game is even close to using that. even i7s (like you said) arent getting fully utilized (and those have "only" 4 cores and 8 threads!).
yes. gaming on an old arcuitecture like this will hurt you in the long run. even today, the slower generation and the lower clocks makes this a pretty much impractical gaming setup. not to mention that you will have to find a dual lga 1366 motherboard...
this might be a really awesome workstation and redering machine, but for gaming? no.

It is a near complete rig with 1366 mobo, a 1,500w psu 80+ gold cert, HAF-X case, 16Gb vram etc but no gpu's, which I have. To buy it for the asking I know I could buy a 4790k rig new without gpu for £50 more.
if it would perform in games (no current issue's), as an editor it would be great but I do want it to work in games. I was using a Phenom 9550 x4 until June last year for gaming and had no issues running bf4. Obviously this would jump all over the AMD first gen Phenom and I'm guessing would at least handle current games with high end gpu's like 2x 780Ti's or 2x 970's?

lol no, the first gen phenoms cant handle shit anymore.
the 4790k is just like your 4770k, just some better power delivery and temps. it will perform the same as the 4770k, when running at the same clocks.
since you already have a 4770k rig, I dont see the point in getting a new 4790k one, but if are planning on doing video editing, get the xeon system as a second system. those cores will help you chew threw videos.

Answers my question as iv been looking at same system on Gumtree for £450 wondering do i get that or upgrade my pc to the 4790k i7 and believe after answers its going to be the 4790k i7 i go with thanks could have been a costly mistake.
