I just got Internet service from Comcast, just Internet and nothing else, and I can't seem to get it working. The self install says I need to connect a coax cable. The problem is the coax cable is on the other side of the house and very far away from my current desktop and internet modem set up and I haven't had cable for many years. So is it possible for me to just plug in my phone line that comes in from the wall to the modem and have it working like that? That is how my current set up is and work perfectly fine. Is it necessary for me to connect in the coax cable?

Solution
Since you didn't get phone service through comcast you don't. I would recommend using a laptop and the existing coax as a test, before you run new cable. Make sure you can get it to work at all. You should also search the outside of the house. The coax from the service may come out of the ground closer to your desired location than you think.

OK so I'll have to run the coax cable through the house but with it do I have to plug in my phone line?
