[citation][nom]dragonsqrrl[/nom]The HD5970 is currently going for around $700-$750, and that's if you can actually find one available.[/citation]
Yes, I will agree; particularly with the supplies available, the 5970 certainly wouldn't be in the same price range as the 480, especially with some more leaks that suggest the price being lower than I thought.
(and yes, voted up for providing a REASONABLE disagreement)
[citation][nom]dragonsqrrl[/nom]Assuming that the GTX480 consumes 295 watts is an over simplification, and well... misleading.[/citation]
True... Hence why I didn't specify that figure. (unless I missed something, and the 5970 consumes that on load...) TBH, 295w isn't something I'd call sane whatsoever, from ANY video card maker. (well, perhaps Intel's Larrabee...) Likewise, I wasn't even aware that, with PCI-e 1.0, you could even sUPPLY that much with just a 16-lane slot, plus a 6+8 pin pair of connectors. (I thought those would only get you 275, and it was best to NEVER cut it close)
Still, I was thinking it might not be that outlandish to think that the 480 would have a TDP that would share more in common with the 5970's than the 5870's. At the very least, sharing the same number of external power pins would, as my logic went on, back it up; I'd guess that both would likely be in the 210-240-watt range.
Mainly, my point was that even if it's not as extreme as claimed, it's worrying that it seems all but written that the 480 will fail to live up to its hype, fail to justify its price, (and TDP) and hence lead to a lengthy period of market stagnation.
