Considering they offer a double lifetime warranty (with registration), they are decent.
However, you will likely end up using the warranty more so than other brands. They are slightly lower quality compared to names such as Sapphire, however they arent "bad"
I bought an XFX r9 270x and I just want some info on the fail rates for xfx as compared to other companies. Thanks in advance!
They come with a double warranty and trust me, you would need it. The XFX cooling build is bad. And would get much hotter then other brands such as sapphire even though they have around the same performance. I personally love sapphire and their build quality is great.

I bought an XFX card a few years ago that did come with that double lifetime warranty. However, I had to create a ticket when that card wouldn't work in my system... and yes, XFX did try to troubleshoot the problem with me and did send me a replacement card... However, after that... they removed the double lifetime warranty... So I'm guessing that "double lifetime thingy" is only good for One Use.
I found out about my card no longer having that warranty when I wanted to sell it.. I was going to transfer the warranty over after I sold it but when I went online it said it was no longer covered under any warranty... *ouch*
I had my 7750 Ghost for a while, and I never had an issue with it.
Given that, my friend had the same card and had to RMA it and they ended up honoring the warranty after it was replaced.
However, XFXs customer support has some variable results for various people. Honestly, that sounds like a believable experience.
As long as you register the product within a month of purchase, XFX offers a limited lifetime warranty - so they will replace the card as long as its being being manufactured.
XFX generally uses the reference design for PCBs - I don't think they have any full-custom products - but their Black Edition cards are excellently binned products. They are binned so that the factory overclock that they ship with the card operates at the same voltage as the stock card. Also, the current generation of XFX aftermarket coolers are pretty good. They go a bit heavy on the heatsink side so that the fans don't have to work as hard, the only issue is that if you do get to the point that the two fans do have to ramp up, they might be (slightly) louder than a three-fan solution. For average use, you're probably not going to notice the difference.
Lastly, XFX has been upping their PR and customer service lately. They often poke their head in here, and address a lot of the reviews on Newegg.
