XFX Radeo 4890 and Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 -- Compatibility

Hello Community!
I recently purchased a new video card (XFX Radeon HD-489X-ZSFR) for my computer. I've had the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 motherboard for a few years. I understand that motherboard is PCI-e 1.0 and that the Radeon 4890 is a PCI-e 2.0 card. According to articles and other forum posts I've seen, this graphics card and motherboard are compatible (forward/backward).

After installing the XFX Radeon HD-489X-ZSFR and starting the computer up, nothing happens on the monitor. It's like the motherboard doesn't even recognize the new video card. The Radeon starts up and the fan is on but that it is. No activity!

Can anybody confirm that the Radeon 4890 is compatible with this motherboard? Is there anything special that needs to happen to install a new video card?

I tried resetting the CMOS but that didn't help. Would upgrading the BIOS help?

I've tried searching extensively on google but cannot find much helpful info. I've reached out to Gigabyte for assistance as well.

Power supply has 2 PCI-e cables (as required by the graphics card ). I confirmed both cables work, by testing them both with my old video card.

Follow up:

This evening I tried some additional steps.

1)I upgraded my motherboards bios to F14.

2)I again tried resetting the CMOS.

3)Tried using the VGA-DVI connector.

None of these steps helped.


Some things I've noticed that may help. I have my current card back in the computer (FoxConn/Nvidia 8800GTS 320mb). When I start the computer up, the first screen on the monitor I get is completely back. IN the upper left hand corner is says something like "Nvidia 8800GTs, etc, etc".
-I feel like this means my mother board/bios recognizes the video card. Could this be why it doesn't recognize the Radeon 4890, because it is looking for the 8800GTS? Does anybody know.

I previously tried uninstalling all Nvidia drivers, but it didn't help.

Is there a way to uninstall the 8800GTS from the BIOS? I know this sounds kinda wierd...

Why not try the card on another system and see if it boots there ... if not then the issue is with the card, not with your configuration. If it boots then it might be related with your configuration ( motherboard , PSU most likely )

Thanks for checking in. All my friends are console gamers and don't have the necessary hardware to check!!! I wish I had access to a compatible PC setup.

I hate not being able to figure this out on my own.

What about reformatting my computer???

...I still feel like this wouldn't address anything in the BIOS so I'm not sure it would make a difference...

I received the replacement card and it worked on the first try. Case closed!
