can anyone really explain how the XMP option in the BIOS is related to memory overclocking?

my motherboard ( https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B550-GAMING-GEN3 ) is said to support until 4400 mhz ocs but my sticks are 3200mhz will i be able to reach at least 4000mhz? they are hyperx fury standard sticks. the processor is a ryzen 5 5500. if I can't then whats holding me back? the processor or the sticks?

eXtreme Memory Profiles. They are just stored settings in the memory that can be applied over the default memory speeds.

Defaults stock speed for DDR4 is 2133, 2400, and particularly on a Ryzen 5500, 3200 is the maximum "supported" speed. The motherboard can run up to 4400, but that is very optimistic with Ryzen. With a lucky CPU and really good memory kit, it is possible, but not likely.

Overclocking beyond the XMP profiles is going to require manual memory timing settings, and you aren't likely to reach 4400, let alone 4000. Ryzen I/O dies tend to top out at around 3800. You don't really have a high end chip either. The 5500 is technically a Zen2 rather than Zen3 architecture like most of the other 5000 series chips.

Unless you got really lucky, your memory probably can't get over 3600 either, but you never know until you try.

That said, anything beyond 3600 is really not worth it with Ryzen.

what if i get sticks that run at 3600mhz at stock, can i maybe get them to 4000mhz?

Not likely with Ryzen 5500, no. Maybe a 5600X or higher.

Even then, it is luck of the draw. 3600 CL 14/15/16 is quite good, so if you can manage that with a 3200 kit, you are doing pretty well.

Actually what I am doing. running a 3200 CL16 kit at 3600 with the same timings.
