XMP on the Intel Xeon E3 1231 V3?

I've recently upgraded my guest PC from a FX-4100 to a 1231 V3 (£120, CPU only. Freaking brilliant!) and I am just wondering wither that, if I buy XMP RAM sticks, would it go higher than 1600MHz which is the apparent max speed according to Intel's ark.intel.com.

Also, the motherboard I'm buying is the MSI B85-G41-PCMate.

If it is permanently capped at 1600MHz, is it still worth it buying XMP RAM? Or will getting XMP memory overclock it to more than the CPU can officially support?

Oh, and a very small and noobish question... but what is the difference between DDR3 and DDR3L?

Answered in your other thread which was a different story, different mobo, this mobo tops at 1600 so not really worth buying 2400

Yea, this is an old thread. I've changed my mind since I can get a used Gigabyte Z97MX-Gaming 5 for £70.

With that you can try enabling XMP if it's a no go, can try manually at 1866, 2133 or whatever and prob one higher than 1600 will run

Can you see any reason why XMP wouldn't run?

The CPUs MC has to be strong enough to carry the DRAM, if it's not, on say a K series CPU you can OC it to help it alon which you can't really do with an Xeon

INitially it would boot to the mobos default, 1333 or 1600 from there if XMP won't work you set them manually to 1600, 1866, 2133 or whatever

So, if XMP doesn't work... I could possible set it to 2400 manually with a little of help?

Possibly but wouldn't count on it, as said it all depends on the mC of the individual CPU you are trying to run the DRAM with

And you think the Xeon won't like it? Knowing it's theoretically limited to 1600MHz

Not sure how to say it, there's just no way of telling how strong an individual CPU or it's MC will be till you get it, you hit the silican lottery and it might run 2666, you don't 1600 is it

That's fair enough then. So, I will just have to wait and see then? I guess anyway.

Yup, I will. I'm still waiting for delivery of the motherboard... So once I've got that I'll set up a temporary test bench and see how it goes from there

Of the two I'd go the Corsair, both are good sets but the Corsair are a little stronger overall, I used these (32GB sets) in and article last year
