xp constantly freezing

I have windows xp, ...firefox is constantly freezing badly to the point of having to restart after very few interactions ...i have no apps or extensions that i am aware of...i have dumped cookies...history.....it times out many many times ..1.0.0.4

Well considering you are on XP without any anti-virus... I'd say its highly likely you have a virus.

Try running ccleaner, malwarebytes, adware remove tool, spybot s&d, and find and AV compatible with XP. Maybe look online for an older version of AVG Free. Reboot your PC then upgrade your browsers to latest version that is XP supported and try again.

I'd also suggest you look into getting a new PC. One XP is end of life and no longer support by Microsoft updates meaning if loopholes are found, they are not fixed and makes it easier for attackers to get into your system. Secondary, any hardware with XP on it is normally around 7 years old now...

i agree with the above but have you tried to use another web browser to see if the freezing is isolated to firefox?

XP with no antivirus is just about the most risky thing you could possibly ever do. Boot into safe mode and do a malware scan with malwarebytes asap.

Start > control panel > power settings > set power for high performance.
Set all devices in system so they will not power down to save power.
Go thru the whole list and set the drive, network, mouse,monitor, so that they will never go into standby.
Link power state management: set to OFF

Also device manager: open the manager and scroll down to mouse.
Open mouse and click power options tab.
UN-check the box: "turn off this device to save power."
Then apply all settings and re-start.
Go thru device list, and turn off all standby for power to all devices.

This is what happens: the computer goes into standby to "save power."
Then when you wake it up, everything does not come back on line.
Then the computer freezes...or malfunctions.
This is a problem with windows default settings.

I have had this problem before on several computers...
(in fact even windows 7 has the same bugs)
Once you change all the default power settings, the problem generally stops.

HOWEVER
a P4 processor does not have a bunch of headroom..that's true.
You need to minimize the number of processes that are running...to avoid the processor being overloaded.
Therefore: delete as many applications as possible.
And don't run anything that eats up all the processor space, like: Chrome.
