XP does not detect Sound device

I reformatted my computer recently, but ever since my computer does not
recognize my speakers. When I go to "Sounds and Audio Device" in Control
Panel, it tells me "No Audio Device".

Prior to the reformat, my sound worked fine. What can I do?

What sound hardware do you have? If it is onboard, did you install your
motherboard drivers?

I am having similar problems with audio. I always used headphones with the mic/phone jacks- no problems.

Then when my altec lansing headphones needed to be replaced, I bought a set with a USB connection.

They have been working fine, but the wire is worn, so I decided to see if the old ones were any better until I could get out to buy a new set.

My pc no longer recognizes the "altec lansing headphones" I used to use.
When I go into "sounds" in control panel, it says "no audio device"

I went out and bought new sennheiser stereo headphones with a 3.5 mm jack. I am getting the same message "no audio device" when I go into sounds in the control panel.

If I hook my broken USB headphones back up, it is listed as the default device in sounds.

Any ideas what I need to do? I don't want to buy another set of USB headphones because the sound was not nearly as good as the other type.

I checked for microsoft updates and everything is ok.
