Solution
Sorry Crashof43! I realize now that I found and shared the link you had already found and ran the Hive cleanup.

http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php - look for the section titled "SHUTDOWN HANGS ON “SAVING YOUR SETTINGS”

After trying those, if that still doesn't "get-R-done" try getting the latest drivers for your MX 518 mouse and any other suspect drivers, nice mouse btw.

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/support/4259?osid=14&bit=64

Click the 'downloads' link on that page to access the driver download for your mouse. Update us when you've tried it :)

Hey there Vietnam Vet! Thank you for your service. Please note Microsoft is ending support for XP in the spring next year so your days of XP are numbered :)

In the meantime, here's a thread to check out:

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Today i after i tryed ever thing that was tryable and what you had asked me to give a try........I was thinking (i do that quite often "Think" ) i thought about the video card driver and wonder IF it was the cause of the shut down HANG ?........i have the HIS 7770 Video card and the 13.6 driver...........the last one was a 12.6......I went to device manager and did a roll back to the former one.....Then yes a restart.......I asked the machine for a re start.. after close to 1 minutes....it Did.......It Shut down and restarted.........Booted back UP wonderfully and i went to the Cat panel and checked to See what was Now installed it was the old 12.6...........Thank YOU all Who lend a hand here.........I appreciate each and ever one of you.
