XP Pro to XP Pro networking probs

I have an unusal networking problem.

I have my main system that's been running XP Professional since November without even a hiccup. I have it hooked up to switch so I can use it as a file server for all the drivers and programs I keep on it for newer systems/system repairs.

In the past, I've had no trouble with networking W9x machines to it, but yesterday I tried another XP Pro machine, and I couldn't get it to network. I set an IP addy on the file server (machine 1) for 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0. I then set the second machine to and addy 192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0. I cannot spot the other machine on the network. Also, as a side note, the second machine has an ethernet NIC and a USB PC to PC connection (yes, those dreaded MSI boards  ). I tried disabling that, bridging the network, etc, to no avail.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

can you ping each opther, can you ping localhost, can you ping yourself?

If they squeeze olives to get olive oil, how do they get baby oil?

I can ping myself, but I cannot ping the other IP addy.

Also, I made sure the firewall was off, so that's not it either.

ok, sounds rather like a cable/card problem, assuming all is setup right, are you using the usb thingy or the ehernet connection- should be a crossover cable if going from ethernet to ethernet without a hub, I dont have a clue about usb network connections- my strong opinoin is that usb is for gamnepads and cameras- NOT networks.

I'm using the ethernet card, not the USB thingy.

What's even odder is that on boot-up, I can see the NIC's activity light flashing on the other machine (the one already booted).

Weird

Computer 2:
MSI KT133A board with T-Bird 1200@1400, XP Pro, 3Com 3C905 NIC, blue regular CAT5 cable. IP of NIC 192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0 IP of USB PC-2-PC 192.168.0.3/255.255.255.0 (USB LAN disabled in device manager)

Gee, didn't think one simple letter could cause such outrage  . I was actually thinking more "valleyish", though I never been there.

*cough* *going into professional mode*

Firewall has been disabled on both PC's. There is no option on the MSI board to shut off the USB PC-2-PC connection.

Not only tried different cables, but also a different hub, still no luck. There has to be some hidden setting that I am overlooking, but I don't know what it is.

I aspire to being in the ranks with FatBurger, Crashman, BTVillarin, Labdog, svol, etc

But, without being an Meltie or a scramtron.

I review the pages constantly, I just don't post a lot.

You never heard the term Comcrap??? 😱

Never before has a name been so fitting for a manufacturer!!

I swear, they go out of their way to make sure their systems are hard to mod. For instance, my laptop has a LT winmodem built in. But, you can't run NT/W2K on it and use the appropriate LT driver because the modem gets it resources from the bios (or some sh*t like that) and it won't work. Plus, it's a 266 MMX chip (not PII) but on SisSandra, it's slower than a 166 on a TX board (Laptop uses the OptiFire chipset; are they still around?)

Even their iPaq's suck, they're having trouble with the 3835's now. Geesh

Finally solved the issue!!!

Turns out the hub/switch were grounding out. Not sure why it stopped the XP machines but not the 9x ones, but I unplugged the switch, then plugged it back in.

Wahoo, it works.

Thanks Labdog and all others that helped.
