I just read the article <A HREF="http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20041001/index.html" target="_new">AthlonXP Underclocking for a Low-Power Fix</A>
and I'm wondering if anyone tried that? could that be done on Thouroughbred core axp too? I think I'm going to try it..but i don't even know what's silver conductive lacquer .. also, seems like nForce2 based mobo doesn't work with this mod

I really don't see much point... It's worth unlocking the multipliers, but I don't see why anyone should bother with the whole 'make it mobile' thing. All the OEM-only hard to come by software will probably work with a desktop chip anyway  .

Besides all that, my mobo doesn't support any less than 1.4V anyway :frown: .. I was pretty lucky to get a 1700+ that does 2Ghz at that voltage

Hi

I did my XP2400+ Thoroughbred B core today and it worked fine. I can run the processor down to 4x using CrystalCPUID but some of the multipliers don't work and some lock the computer. The program seems think my processor should run at 11x as standard whereas it should be 15x. Setting CrystalCPUID to 11x or 15x results in the processor running at 11x. I suspect these problems are due to the standard links set on the processor. This is not a problem to me as all I want to do is run it slow while it is being used as a server or for downloading. I will reboot should I want to run at full speed. I'm using an Epox 8KHA+ mainboard.

With these super locked processors you can no longer unlock them by mod'ing bridges. The only way to get access to multipliers is to turn the processors into "mobiles" and use software multiplier control.

That's theory, anyway. I haven't heard of anyone actually doing it.

Hi there, I'm wondering if ur mainboard is able to recognized ur cpu as "AMD Athlon XP-M" ?
So u mean that when you boot ur pc, it gets to 133x15, when u change the multiplier, you can change from 4x to 11x and 15x won't work anymore (as 15x result in 11 right?) therefore the way you to get speed back is to reboot pc?

Electronics Shops. It's actually intended for circuit board designers to make little tweaks and corrections easily to prototype boards.

Radio shack maybe? We don't have them on this side of the pond (AFAIK) so I couldn't say for sure, but people seem to suggest them for this type of stuff.

Hi all

My motherboard (Epox 8KHA+) shows the processor as "AMD K7 Processor" at boot. CPUID shows the processor name to be "AMD Athlon XP-M".

When I boot the processor goes to it's standard speed of 15 x 133 = 2000mHz. CrystalCPUID allows me to set various multipliers (I've not tried them all) but for some reason I cannot set the processor back to it's original speed using the 15x setting. CrystalCPUID shows the 'original' processor to be 11 x 133 = 1466mHz rather than 2000. Setting 11x or 15x results in the processor running at 1466. I might be possible to set it back to full speed using some other multiplier value but I've not had time to experiment yet.

The conductive paint I used is intended for repairing damaged PCBs or damaged heater tracks on car rear windows. I filled the pits between the contacts on the CPU with superglue as shown on the video on Tomshardware before joining the points with paint because there was a bare gold track showing that the paint would have shorted to.

Hi Andy. Seems like you may be restricted to the lower multipliers. While that may seem like a bad thing, you do get better perf, when you use higher fsb. You might be able to get as high as 12.5, but maybe less. The reason you get 11, when you ask for 15 is because your board is resticted to 5 digits, and to get to 15 you need 6.

Info on conductive paint. Search for "Electrolube" and "SCP" or "Ritelok" and "Conductive Silver Paint" and you should find stockists. Alternatively, search for "CircuitWorks" and "Conductive Pen", these are dearer than the paint but should be easier to use as you don't need to mess with masking.
For people in the UK the RiteLock paint and the CircuitWorks pens are available from Maplin Electronics stores (www.maplin.co.uk). Paint: Order code: N36BA. Pens: Order code N73AA - Std and N74AA - Micro Tip. There are numerous other stockists of these and similar products.
