Running across those poorly put together cheesy sites with bad graphics at 640x480 is pure nostalgia...and for that reason too bad they are going away. Brings me back to the mid 90s.

RIP soon geocites

This made me go back at look at the first site I ever created in college. pure html, bad coloring and some really old pictures I had on there.
Going to save some of the info but the rest will be history.

Geocities, even with its overly detailed and repeating GIF backgrounds and embedded midi's, couldn't compete with MySpace with its even more detailed and repeating and semi-transparent backgrounds and layouts, nor with the embedded copyright violating flash music player and overly complex and machine-slowing java applets.

Plus with its 25MB limit, aspiring models couldn't very well post their portfolio online for pornographe... er.. legitimate movie producers to explore.

Geocities was fun for me for my first website but I moved on to the likes of Bluehost (ultimate control) long long ago. I think it is rightfully so that Yahoo closes the book on Geocities. Geocities could've been kept up to date with the rest of the web and upgraded their puny limits but unfortunately is just wasted away.

I got the notice, but since it dropped in my spam folder, I thought that maybe that was a scam idea of some sort. Still, moved it to inbox so it would remind me to backup the site just in case. Sad to see geocities go, even though I don't use it at all now, but it was my first experiments online with html...

Does anyone know what will happen with Geocities e-amil accounts? I currently have one @geocities.com that's forwarded to my @yahoo.com address.

From the mail for the geocities shutdown:
[citation][nom]Geocities[/nom]To quickly download your published files, visit your GeoCities web site, right-click on each page, and choose Save Page As... from the menu that appears. Choose a location on your computer to save your files, then click OK or Save. Learn more about downloading your files.[/citation]
Now, where would my site work if I backed it up this way? :p

I've still got my own cheese looking web page with scrolling gif's from 1996 on my mindspring account. At least I don't need to see mine go so soon, lol. I haven't touched my web site in over 5 years, lol. If it comes to it, I'll simply log into the ftp site and download it directly to put elsewhere if I want to hold onto the cheese for longer, heh. So far so good. Go mindspring (otherwise known as earthlink)!

Actually it has a lot of code, and absolute/relative paths that will never be saved in mypage_files folder and won't work even if saved.

But maybe I got what they meant: log on to your geocities account, file manager, 'save target as...' on each and every item stored there, and recreate all the folders exactly as they were, and edit the code so it won't have absolute paths to other geocities files (my site has just 15 MB of space, so I had to use other geocities accounts for some large animated gifs to as much as I could, plus the hourly traffic limit).

Anyway, I always have a backup offline code, that might be just 1 or 2 minor updates older than the online version. The problem with that nostalgic site is that I don't even remember what the updates are.

I wonder why they don't update Geocities. They should continue to offer limited free hosting and step-up efforts to drive traffic there; I mean, isn't ad revenue kind of a part of the business plan?

I hosted my first website on Geocities! Way back when I thought the only way to make a website was line by line of code. Sniffle.

Hah, I didn't even know Geo cities was still up. I remember I use to have an account there like back in college. That was pretty dumb of yahoo to pay all that money for it and then fail to do anything with it. Oh well.

Well, at the very least this will probably clean up all those old "shrines" to fictional characters. Man back in the day I'd search for something about a show and half of my hits would be geocities pages. Sigh. Nostalgia.
