Hello!

Recently I have been having issues with my default browser on Chrome. Every time I open a new tab it's redirected to Yahoo, and I can't figure out why.

I tried reinstalling Chrome, which resulted in a temporary fix, however the issue returned within a week. I have looked into all the Chrome settings, and none of them say they're going to Yahoo, they're all set to Google. I tried using the same Google account on another computer, and the issue persisted there too, leading me to think it's a problem with Chrome, not my computer.

Any suggestions for fixes (asides from using a different browser entirely) would be greatly appreciated!

Kind Regards,

Flupps

Update: I've tried scanning the computer with Malwarebytes and Windows Defender - neither of them solved the issue.

Solution
from what i'm finding on google, it is a virus, but isnt found by many consumer softwares (there are a surprising amount of those). try this:

Export your bookmarks
Import or export bookmarks - Chrome Help

Close all Chrome windows and tabs.
Go to the Start menu > Control Panel.
Click Programs and Features.
Double-click Google Chrome.
Click Uninstall from the confirmation dialog. Delete your user profile information, like your browser preferences, bookmarks, and history, select the "Also delete your browsing data" checkbox.

Click Start, copy in search %LOCALAPPDATA%\ and remove folder Google

Download Chrome

I don't think it's a virus, as I've done a full scan. Also, I'm quite careful with my installs not to check any boxes that shouldn't be checked - even if I did, I wouldn't know how to stop the issue 🙁

Under startup I've chosen "Continue where you left off". But I tried changing it to "Open a specific set of pages" and set it to Google, however it redirects to Yahoo instantly :/ I also tested "Open the new Tab page", which also didn't work.

The extensions that I'm using: AdBlock, AdBlock for Youtube, appear.in screen sharing, Chrometana - redirect Bing somewhere better, Facebook Auto Poke, Google Docs, Google Docs Offline, Google Keep, Google Sheets, Tab for a Cause, and Hola.

I'm in the process of doing this - just got slightly confused at the "Delete your user profile information, like your browser preferences, bookmarks, and history" part. Is this a separate step to selecting the "Also delete your browsing data" checkbox? If so, how do I delete the user profile information?

Thank you!

This appears to have worked, however last time I reinstalled it worked for about a week before breaking again. I shall wait a while and then update on whether it's continued to work!

Thank you ever so much for your help :)

The most important part is the folder in the localappdata section. i dont think this gets deleted when you uninstall chrome. if it does come back, try changing your DNS to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4. one of the trojans that causes this changes your DNS server. Hopefully it doesnt come back
