Tarlis, the spear-throwing archer, wasn't the most powerful character I've
ever made by a long shot, but this was the first time I've managed any
ending better than the standard wand of destruction. In the past I got a
fallen champion there, and managed to get a wizard into the chaos plane,
only to get turned into a jelly.

The closest I ever got before, though, was a weaponsmith, who managed to get
all the way to D:50 going strong, with all the gear necessary to complete
the last fight, only to kill himself 'trying to become a great writer' using
the trident of the red rooster to keep his mana up while making chaos
resistance scrolls. Not sure I ever saw that one in the guidebook...

Anyway, this time I finally did it. I had an unsure moment before the tower
of flame, but the rune-covered spear was more powerful there than I thought,
and it did the job.

The *only* 'cheating' I did was scumming for a raven birthsign, but there
was some debateable play like luring the banshee down to the forest. No
save-scumming or wadomf here.

After the tower I had a fairly easy time of it, soaring through the levels
only to finish the blue dragon caves at level 33.
I decided to press on for XP and do the mana temple, which was my first real
challenge, and required 5 blessed scrols of charging, a wand of fireballs,
and a staff of power (WI +7), amulet of perseverance (WI +5), orb of water
(WI +10), and my trusty amulet of light (such a nice item) to complete.
After killing the archmage I was at level 35.

Deeper into the dungeon for more XP then... I was lucky, and uncovered a
tension room with some 30+ greater titans. Owning a stack of 28
giant-slaying ammo was enough to get my levels right up high enough to do
the trident quests.

I went off to get the red rooster trident, then did the quickling tree,
followed by the unicorn quests. I opted to kill the white unicorn, because I
had plenty of chaos resistance, and could really use the 7 potions of gain
attributes. Water was short by now though, and I only just had enough to
bless them all.

After this it was time to wish for a girdle of giant strength, and take my
other 2 rings of djinni summoning off to finish the game.Before leaving I
used a potion of exchange to turn my healing (or was it cure poison) into...
6 MORE potions of gain attributes. Without enough holy water, I just plunged
the dungeon and hoped to find some. No such luck, and a big mistake.

D:50 was a cinch though, the archer's piercing ability, and a massive
willpower to use with ball spells, made it a breeze. After that, though,
things got *very* bad...

First up was those potions of gain attributes. I had 4 potions of water, but
none were holy. I really had no good answer, being locked down there, so I
did something I never throught I'd ever do in ADOM, I wished for potions of
water!!!
Getting a stack of 4 and 2, I guessed the 2 would be holy, and with that
managed to get myself 8 potions of holy water, enough for the pre-chaos
blessing.

Then it was into the chaos gate, and funnily enough it became my birthday
just after entering....

Against andor drakon, I had to rely on a host of common items to give me a
chance. Amulet of free action, rings of stun resistance and the clear mind,
and the ancient mummy wrapping for death resistance. Unfortunately, archers
can't shoot in the dark, and due to the necessity of the amulet of free
action replacing my amulet of light, I was in the dark... Checking my
inventory I saw Tinderbox, I saw flint and steel, but I was missing perhaps
the most common essential of them all - a torch. Having relied on spells of
light and amulets of light all game, I had given up on them long ago.
I'd just wished for speed, so I had that base covered, so I thought to hell
with it - people make wishes when they blow out their birthday candles, lets
go for it...
I did the next crazy thing I never thought I'd do.... I wished for torches.
That's right... Torches. *sigh*
Luckily, the torches did the job, I was able to moderately wound Andor with
humanoid slaying ammo, and a rune-covered trident, whereupon my trident and
my melee spear abilities saw me through. He was easier to melee than I
thought, needing only 1 blessed potion of ultra healing and only half
corruption me (about 10 corruptions). With a final might stab from that
wonderful trident I got the ending I was dreaming of.

Heavily drained, I was far mightier before facing Andor

WISHES (in order)
Girdle of giant strength
Potions of water
Speed
Torches

All at the super-late game. Read above for the amusing wish dilemnas

ITEMS:
~~~~~~
> He: blessed crown of leadership [+2, +7] {Ch+18}
> [65s]
Gained from D:50
> Gi: uncursed girdle of giant strength [+0, +0] {St+12}
> [30s]
A wish reward
> RH: blessed Trident of the Red Rooster (+36, 6d12+18) [+12, +12] {Ma+24}
Insane when thrown with a level 50 spear archer.
> Bo: blessed seven league boots [+1, +0]
> [30s]
My only pair, gained from the big room!!!
> MW: blessed elven long bow "Sun's Messenger" (+15, +15)
> [30s]
Crowning gift Funny how my missile slot was on bows here, because all game
I'd been using spears.
> uncursed robes of resistance (-4, -4) [+3, +12] {To+5}
> [60s]
From a named jackal demon
> cursed medium obsidian shield "Protector" [+20, +4] {To+2}
> [46s]
Precrowning gift, very lucky.
> heap of 7 blessed spears (+1, 1d8)
> [350s]
> heap of 25 uncursed spears (+1, 1d8)
> [1250s]
These were my bread and butter in the early game, and were used throughout,
even on D:50. Thankyou Thomas for wands of trap creation. :)
> blessed rune-covered trident (+6, 3d12+6) [+4, +4] {Dx+12}
> [80s]
Raven birthsign got me this in time to blitz the temples with it.
> SNIP 2 pages of slaying ammo
Slaying ammo, mainly from banshee in forest and casino.
> heap of 3 blessed brass rings
> [3s]
> heap of 2 uncursed brass rings
> [2s]
got 1 RODS's from D:50, one from the banshee forest, and two from the blue
dragon caves. The last brass ring was found that way.
> Wands ('\')
Snip a huge list of wands. Of note was the wand of fireballs I gave 4
blessed scrolls of charging to do the mana temple.
> Potions ('!')
> uncursed potion of gain attributes
> [4s]
I got masses of POGAs. as well as finding 5-6, I got 7 from doing the black
unicorn quest, and a further 6 from dipping potions into exchange. I love
using potions of exchange on potions, because there are just *so many* nice
potions in the game, you have a massive chance of getting something truly
wonderous.
These potions, though, were more numerous than water just before the final
dive, and as such I still had one, even after my crazy wish (see above),
that couldn't be used.
> heap of 2068 cursed spenseweeds
> [4136s]
Yes, I used copy/paste to make my character run around the big room herbing.
Amazing just how much I got, including well over 2500 stomafillias, most of
which were used to appease the gods.
SKILLS:
~~~~~~
> Pole arms 10
> Bows 8
> Crossbows 9
> Thrown axes & hammers 2
> Thrown daggers 1
> Thrown rocks & clubs 2
> Thrown spears 14 +28 +21 +4 Mastery 6252
> Boomerangs & scurgari 1
Again I was using copy/paste in fighting. As such I had:
tttttt in(a
on my clipboard for ranged fighting with melee weapons (spears). This had
the side-effect of making me throw all kinds of other melee weapons/pickaxes
throughout the game as I hammered the paste button, and besides confusing
those monstes as they saw an arsenal fly through the air, it didn't do half
bad damage. :)
Hence, the weapon skills.
> Shields lvl 8 +16 DV excellent
> 298pts
Funny, I was dual-wielding shields for most of the game. You'd have thought
I'd get more than level 8 eh? All that ranged combat and bezerk/coward
switching took it's toll though.
> First aid ................100 (superb) [+1d5]
Was unexpectedly useful in the early game, and great in the mid-game for
eating spear traps.
> Fletchery ................100 (superb) [+2d4] (ma)
Never used

Never found this. Shame. :)

Darkforge pools. Never got the wish I wanted, but these were probably better
looking back. Kept me safe all game.

Absolutely incredible. Was shooting with about 300energy points.
> Beast of Burden, Master Packager, Porter,
Amazing talents, necessary due to my stack of spears, and my failure to find
a SINGLE girdle of carrying all game

..
Well, I feel all acheived now. Thanks for reading all.

By any means necessary. You became the Avatar of Balance because you were
willing to do... unbalanced stuff like this.

>> Thrown spears 14 +28 +21 +4 Mastery

This will surely make you a folk hero among the wanderers of Ancardia.

Congrats on the win.

Now that you mention it, I guess I had to balance the girdle of giant
strength with some more mundane items, right? :)

It was fun to play indeed, but hard to carry. :)
