Got a Z170 Pro Gaming Motherboard and i7 6700 @ 4.00 GHz with a Gigabyte GTX 980 and when playing GPU 'intense' applications I noticed that the GPU makes a buzzing sound when under 'heavy' load.

I also tried switching PCI-e slots and the GPU to a GeForce GT 545 (which doesn't require PSU pin connectors) and that makes the same buzzing noise when under 'heavy' load.

When playing with the same GPUs (Gigabyte GTX 980 or GeForce GT 545), on the same graphics settings, on a Dell XPS i630 I heard no buzzing sound which leads me to believe that it is something other than the GPU.

Any ideas on what is causing this or how to fix it?

Ok so I just tested the same applications on the same 5:4 75Hz monitor that I used for my i630 and the GPUs made less of a buzzing sound at the same resolutions as when on the 16:9 60Hz monitor.

So either a higher frequency CPU and a higher resolution or lower frequency monitor combined with the GPUs causes the GPUs to make a buzzing noise.

I think they buzzing may be coming from the on board fan of the GPU, when the GPU is clocked higher or is set to higher in game presets or setting it makes the GPU hotter there for activating the GPU's fan controller. The hotter it gets the faster the fan spins causing a buzzing/ vibrating sound.

Try playing your finger in the middle of the fan to stop if for say 5 secs and see if the buzzing stops then. The fan may stop for 5 second or so after releasing the fan. This is just a safety/ anti motor burn out control mechanism so the fan doesn't burn out.

Hope this helps 😀

I tried stopping all 3 fans at once and the buzzing persisted.

I took a closer look and tried listening to the back panel and it sounds like it might be coming from the i7 6700K CPU.

Okay did you try stopping the CPU fan as well ? The only things that would make a buzzing sound in a computer is : Fans that are starting to go, Vibrations on casing or shrouds, PSU Fan or PSU component failing. The last time I had a Buzzing noise in my system it was the PSU buzzing/ whining because it was about to die! The only other time was when a fan was going because the bearing were starting to wear away.

The CPU uses a liquid cooling system so there isn't really a fan on it. The other fans aren't really where the buzzing noise is coming from.

I am sending the computer back to the manufacturer on a warranty and they are going to service it.
