ZoneAlarm starting to annoy me

ZA is starting to not work with any game that I want to play. It used to work fairly well, but then games started crashing instead of asking for access permission the first time they ran. So I started giving preemptive permission via the Program Control tab. Now, the games don't crash, but ZA simply blocks traffic, both inbound and outbound. Recently I've just started turning ZA off because I can't figure out where the problem is. All of the ZA settings are on factory defaults. Most applications seem to work fine with them.

But, I recently tried to install the Lord of the Rings demo, and apparently ZA didn't like the fact that the installer (just your average InstallShield) wanted to download a configuration file from a remote site, so the installer just froze until I CTRL-ALT-DEL'd it and Ended Task, at which point ZA brought up the permission window for the installer. Sigh...

Anyone have some pointers for me?

Get Norton's Personal Firewall. Annoyance level is low. Easy to use and make rules. Should be able to find it online errr I mean at a store near you.

Hillo, I already have the same trouble,...The thing is that ZA will detect a network communication and will pop-up a message, but while you're in your game,...you have to minimize your game and press accept, and the same thing when you install a program,...minimize the window to see if a pop-up will show. The other thing, you can turn it off when you install or play a game...

Set it to remember the network or program and it won't ask after the first time. Unless you can't do that with the free version? I have pro and it doesn't do that, simply set it all up right the first time and it remembers! ZA Pro or plus now (cheaper than pro) are comparable or less in price than the others.

Zone Alarm has an update like every month so make sure you have the latest version.
