COM Surrogate Stopped Working in Windows 10. How to Troubleshoot?

Most people using Windows 10 operating system have complained of experiencing a problem where they get an error message that says “COM Surrogate has stopped working” especially when they browse folders having media files or video. It can result from corrupt codecs needed for viewing the media.

How to Troubleshoot the Issue of “COM Surrogate Has Stopped Working”?

Below are some steps that will help you to troubleshoot the problem,

Disable Thumbnail: Try to disable the thumbnail previews as this can solve the issue on a temporary basis but is not a permanent solution. For this,

- Type File Explorer in the search bar and select File Explorer Options.

- Then View tab and go to “Always show icons, never thumbnails”. After this click on Apply followed by OK and save the changes.

For removing the thumbnails,

- Press on Windows Key +S, type Disk Cleanup. Then select disk cleanup from the results.

- Click OK for removing the thumnails.

Re-register DLLs: You can try in re-registering some of the DLLs with Windows that may probably fix the Surrogate error. For this,
- Click on Command Prompt Admin under the Window button and

- Then type these commands under the cmd window- regsvr32 vbscript.dll, regsvr32 jscript.dll. It may help to solve the issue.

Disable DEP for the dllhost file: By disabling the DEP for the dllhost.exe you can troubleshoot the Surrogate error. For this,
- Click start, right click Computer and select properties.Next go to the Advanced System Settings followed by the Advanced tab

- Select the DEP (Data Execution Protection) and click on “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select”

-Click on Add and then search C:\\Windows\\System32\\dllhost.exe.

- Select Open, OK and then click on Apply and finally OK.

Rollback Display Driver: You can also rollback the display driver to the earlier version but try this method only if any problem occurs after updating the drivers. For this,

- Go to Device Manager

- Then expand the display adapters, right click on the display device

- Select uninstall

- A pop-up box will appear where you should check the option “delete the driver software for this device” and click OK. The device will immediately be uninstalled by Windows while the driver software that has been downloaded from the Windows Update will be deleted. You can later on install a fresh driver software.
