If you are looking for the ability to become a hulking werewolf, feared across the lands, then look no further than Whiterun! You can start the process of becoming a werewolf fairly early in the game, and here's how.
Step 1)Join the companions.
If you are traveling to Whiterun, there's a good chance you'll run into a few of these companions fighting a giant at a farm just outside of the city. Lend a hand if you can get there in time to do so and they'll look favorably on it and invite you to come visit them in Whiterun. Take them up on their offer and meet up with them at Jorrvaskr in Whiterun. Talk to any member you can find and you'll be directed to speak to the harbringer. When you do, he will oppose you and basically challenge you to a fight. Don't use any magic or it's considered cheating, fight him fair and square and win and he'll give you a chance. You'll be asked to run a few errand quests around town, fairly simple stuff, go get a sword sharpened, deliver a shield to Aela. Once you've done that you'll be given what is called a Radiant quest which will direct you to a random location to clear it out. Do this and return and you'll be initiated into the companions officially. This gets you your own bed and secured dresser in your own room here, so can be nice if you don't have the gold for a house yet.
Step 2)Complete the Proving Honor quest.
Once you've officially joined the companions, you can pick up this quest, which will have you heading to the Dustman's Cairn with Farkas as your follower for the duration of this quest. Farkas won't help much in the fights here, he's following just to see how you handle yourself, so don't rely on him coming to your rescue. You'll have to fight through a few Draugr on your way in here, until you find a room with a lever in the middle. Pulling this lever will close the only exit, locking you and Farkas in this cairn. The only way to go now is deeper into the area, and it is fairly linear from here on out. You'll face a number of draugr and silver hand members on your way. Make sure you grab the key from the chest on your way, and when you use it to open the door you'll find the alter with the fragment you need to finish this quest laying on it. Don't just run in and grab it though, as that will spawn many Drugyr and Silver Hand members. Instead, you can lure out the Draugyr first by throwing some fireballs at the points where they would spawn. Detect Dead can help you find them as well. Once you've dealt with them on your own, grab the fragment, as well as the shout from the wall behind the alter, and fight your way back out of here.
Step 3)Head back to Jorrvaskr
Go back to the companions hall in Whiterun to turn in the Proving Honor quest and you'll officially be invited to join the companions inner circle, which will involve a ritual of drinking the blood of Aela, which will turn you into a werewolf yourself. Once this is done you can transform into this form once per day.
Keep in mind, if you are seen transforming a bounty will be placed on you, but crimes committed while you are a werewolf won't incur a bounty, since they can't identify you.
