For general use, light gaming etc. your onboard sound will do fine. I doubt the problem with that other dudes DVD playback is because of his sound card. Sounds like some sort of driver issue. If your looking to put a four speaker system in though you will want to look for a live! or audigy...

oh and just to claify...the audigy DOES support 24bit PLAYBACK. It will NOT record at 24bit though. it will record at a max of 16bit which is more than enough for most uses. There are still lots of studio's which still record at 16bit. peace

onboard sound really doesn't use any less resources than say a live! or audigy would. if your looking for something just to listen to music on cheep computer speakers etc...onboard sound is all you need. if your looking for high end sound spend the extra money.

i have the radeon 32mb ddr and xp had drivers for it when i installed it...!! :) works fine so far..haven't done much graphix stuff yet though so i'll have to check that out.

nope just get a mixer with a good mic preamp. The hercules game theatre is a good idea as it will sit away from your computer to elimate fan noise while recording. but if you wanna save money you can get away with just a sb Live! card or even an old AWE64 or EVEN a sb 16 just get a converter...
