I put a 500W PSU in because even though 400 would be enough (500W is recomended for that gpu but not required) this is cheap and provides some upgrade room for the future

I'm surprised they didn't put the EVGA in that comparison it has higher clock boost and memory speeds.

I saw that sony made a power media dock (Sony VGP-PRZ20C) which includes a higher end gpu among other things for its sony Z series it runs through what seems to be a usb 3.0 connector. my question is would there be a way to run this on a different laptop than the Z series like my lenovo yoga?

Unless you have to game with 3 monitors in 4k you won't need the 980 and only because of the memory cap then the shear power of the gtx 970 could easily handle 4k If I could recommend the EVGA GTX 970 SC its the same price range as a gtx 970 but much more powerful and with a corsair water cooler...
