There are probably a few old ATM machines running XP.

News Microsoft begins forced updates to Windows 11 23H2 — targets PCs running 21H2 and 22H2

I have a few Windows 10 systems that'll be updating to Linux Mint next year. Don't want them to get hacked due to lack of support. One of them is an Intel 7700K w/o TPM  The 7700K still plays AAA titles just fine.

News Samsung's 990 Evo is the world's first hybrid PCIe 4.0 x4 and 5.0 x2 SSD — FrankenSSD has two different interfaces with two different lane widths

4x5.0 would simply heat clench sooner, so M.2 has its limitations  Waiting for something like E3.S for a PCIe5.0 SSD to put in a HEDT.

News Microsoft's draconian Windows 11 restrictions will send an estimated 240 million PCs to the landfill when Windows 10 hits end of life in 2025

Both A/V sigs and OS updates are necessary to be completely safe if you're going to use an internet browser and/or check email. If there's no internet use then the attack surface is significantly reduced.

News Microsoft's draconian Windows 11 restrictions will send an estimated 240 million PCs to the landfill when Windows 10 hits end of life in 2025

Doubt Microsoft's demise as corporate use will continue to depend on Microsoft. Still Linux will be a great solution for Laptop/PCs stuck in Windows 10.

News Microsoft Looking Into Windows Activation Failures After Hardware Swaps

Happened to a Windows10 guest when I had to change system ssd for my Linux KVM. The MAC address and motherboard didn't change. Too annoyed to buy yet another copy of Windows.

News Microsoft Says Windows Updates May Need up to 8 Hours to Complete

The basic issue is one has to leave their computer on over night if updates set to occur late at night. The way I do updates is ask the system to go look after I turn it on. If it does then I do the update and go back to browsing or gaming. Then after I'm done if Windows wants to reboot I tell...

News $2,500 Ethernet Switch Effectively Isolates Audiophiles From Cash

Ethernet doesn't care about the power so long as the power supply continues to supply power. If one is worried about the sound then get a good UPS that conditions the power for the audio equipment. Wasting money on a switch that conditions the electrical signal is such a waste of cash. If one is...

News Windows 11 Runs and Ups on 2006-Era Single-core Intel Pentium 4 CPU

Interesting study. I have a 7700K with a GTX1080. Probably won't be capable of playing AAA games after Windows 10 is end of life. System has no TPM but I'm not "buying" into the need for that h/w. Especially when their are hacks for TPM. As far as Linux is concerned Pop!_OS isn't a bad...

News Gelsinger: Intel Wants Apple Back

Interesting seeing silicon h/w design coming back into vouge in Silicon Valley. Even Tesla sees benefit in doing the same for its AI chips instead of paying the Nvidia tax. After the ARM threat there are other emerging threats like RISC-V.

News GPU Shipments Soar in Q2 with 123 Million Units Delivered

What a hilarious set of circumstances. Miners and cryptocurrency is silly and dangerous (i.e., ransomware really sucks and cryptocurrency, like Monroe, facilitates it). If video games require faster cards and 4-5 year old cards aren't good enough then fewer people are going to be buying AAA...

Review Intel Optane SSD DC P5800X Review: The Fastest SSD Ever Made

As usual in the consumer space it's all about $$'s. Running Optane on a HP laptop is still a viable option, but most consumers don't understand why it helps (I do & it's pretty damn fast). The capacity of this P5800X could have a role for certain consumers running their own home server lab...

News Linux 5.13 Release Candi 3 Fixes 37 Patches From Banned University

I have my doubts there. Microsoft is actually less hostile towards Linux since the writing has been log since on the wall there. Personally I find using WSL v2 with a xrdp session running xfce4 to rdesktop into the X11 display makes for a killer dev environment on my corporate laptop. It's...

That's simple math. It's too bad so many refuse to see the dark side of crypto.

News Free Open Source GPU Under Development for RISC-V

I'm assuming whatever Nvidia did in their GPU hardware isn't something the RISC-V folks need to worry about. This is hardware engineering where the only requirement is a modification to Vulkan, DirectX and OpenGL APIs that allows API to interact with their new GPU hardware. Why waste time trying...
