A 6-core will definitely allow you to edit and render videos more quickly if that's what you're into. As for regular gaming, you won't be seeing that much of a difference between the two.

I just bought a new 7950, while my current card is a 7870. I have all the latest drivers and stuff, will I be able to just swap them out or is there anything special I have to do. If I'm not mistaken, they use the same drivers.

It's still a relatively nice cards, but as demonstrated by these graphs, if you want to play Crysis 3, you're gonna have a bad time.

Absolutely not. At the very worst, a short will ruin the components and you may smell a burnt smell, but nothing will catch on fire unless you decide to cool your CPU with lighter-fluid soaked tissue paper and turn off the automatic thermal throttling feature.
