Question data port on APC UPS?

I've owned many APC UPS over the years. Until recently many had what they described as a "USB data port". Your computer could be connected to it- so the company's software (PowerChute) could communicate with the UPS and, importantly, shut it off during an outage after a designated time. The...

Question salvage old Dell with 4G RAM?

It has a SSD which I put in years ago. I've had a lot of those and so far none have failed. At this point, it's just a play thing. I can experiment with it.

Question salvage old Dell with 4G RAM?

OK, I see on that site it's 64 bit. By the way, strange, but for the past few years- the high quality monitor that I got with that system- since I wasn't using this "Vista Box"- I let my wife take the monitor and I got a cheap not very good monitor at Staples. Then after a while I started to...

Question salvage old Dell with 4G RAM?

I see on the original paper work that it's the E6400 I can't tell- so far- if that page indicates whether it's a 32 bit or 64 bit. I bought it in '07.

Question salvage old Dell with 4G RAM?

Good suggestions. I never thought of upgrading the OS. I wonder if I could get W7 at all and cheap? I've bought RAM in the past, ususally at Micron. They might not have it but I'll check. It was a good machine- hate to dump it. My several much older Dell's with XP and heavy monitors- dump all of...

Question salvage old Dell with 4G RAM?

Dimension 9200 is it possible to upgrade from 32 bit to 64? Or is that built into the CPU? Assuming a 64 bit Vista was even available and it probably isn't.

Question salvage old Dell with 4G RAM?

Believe it or not- Vista. This high end Dell and Vista always performed well. Never any problems. It's too bad that Vista can't see more than 4 G- if even that. Maybe I'll try Linux lite.

Question salvage old Dell with 4G RAM?

I've got a Dell PC I bought way back in '07 which came with Vista. Still works. I bought another in '14 running W8.1 (still used every day). And, I intend to buy a new Dell any day. But, I wish I could keep that old Dell from '07 still working. It's not connected to my home network. I'd like to...

Question dedicated graphic card or not?

In the past, when I bought Dell PCs I always got high end systems with good if not the best graphic cards. I was doing a lot of video work so I wanted the cards. Now, I still do some video work but mostly just for fun. I don't need super speed or performance- just routine performance. So, for a...

    ssd and sleep

OK, I think I get it. Hibernate has to write to disk the full status of the system- open files, etc. but sleep mode doesn't. If you experts don't hesitate to sleep an SSD, then I won't either. I have a high powered Dell XPS system so it should be ok. Thanks for your comments.

    ssd and sleep

I've read somewhere that it's not a good idea to put SSDs into sleep mode. Comment?

SSD boot drive, Win 8.1, sleep mode OK?

Do you think it's best to turn off "fast restart" feature of Win 8.1 if we have a SSD boot drive? It writes some system info to disk to speed up restarting- though probably not nearly as much as sleep/hibernate mode. Joe

SSD boot drive, Win 8.1, sleep mode OK?

I read somewhere- can't remember where- that it's not a good idea to use "sleep" mode with a SSD boot drive if running Win 8.1. Comments? thanks, Joe
