Can you faintly see the picture on the screen? It should be pretty obvious if the only thing not working is the backlight. If you can't see any picture, replace the cable. If you can, it might be the CCFL in the LCD. Replacing this is tricky but usually possible.

Go to Control Panel>Sound. Then select AMD HDMI Output. Click on the Configure button and then select your speaker configuration and finish the wizard.

Of those either the HP ZR27 or Hp ZR30 would be best for gaming. If you can afford it, I would go for the Hp ZR30.
