I replaced my motherboard recently and my previous motherboard had only 4 pin socket for the cpu and my new motherboard has a 8 pin socket, so do I put in 4 + 4 connecter or just 4 pin connecter into the 8 pin socket?

Title says it all, upgrading my CPU and I'm wondering what would i need to do after the new CPU is in the motherboard, will I need to reinstall windows, clear cmos/update bios or any of that stuff? (only asking as i've saw some posts about it and just want to double check)
